G8 - G20 Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Have you been following the G20?  The world leaders have landed.  For some reason they decided to have meetings in two different locations.  They started out in Huntsville, Ontario on Friday June 25th, which is about three hours north of Toronto and called this part of the meeting the G8.

This afternoon they started their convoys south from Huntsville on route to Toronto to hold their G20 meetings.  It has been reported that they are not expecting any great things to happen as a result of the meetings.  We have had large groups of protesters causing havoc in the city, even set a police car on fire.

We have heard from a lot of people that the downtown part of Toronto has been virtually shut down for several days.  Imagine the loss of business for all the restaurant owners who had been counting on large crowds of people to watch the World Cup.  Bad timing on the part of our government.

Here's a peek of the police escort...

Did you see Obama waving, he was on the bus.

Al and Peggy I have not been following the G8 or G20 meetings but it always amazes me how people revert to violence in these types of protests.  Even if they are protesting for the right reasons, it loses all credibility when they do things like setting police cars on fire.

I thought that was Obama I saw waving. I wonder if it truly is worth Toronto hosting G20? The financial loss to businesses that you mention and now the riots that will cost the city largely. I can't stop watching the news and can't believe what is happening in Toronto right now. The protestors are wrecking havoc on our city. What is funny, is they are destorying our city but don't have the nerve to show their faces and wear black clothing head to toe. 2 police cars have been set on fire (last I heard) and just recently a mounted officer was knocked off his horse. The police have had rocks, bottles and lots of other things thrown at them. Yet if any of these protestors needed help they would want the police to respond to them immediately. So very very sad. Sheraton Centre, Delta Chelesea Hotels, Mt. Sinai, Toronto General and Sick Kids Hospitals are all on lockdown due to the violent protests. WOW Sorry - I'm in shock watching this.

Al & Peggy, I've followed it in the news and it too surprises me that these protesters are destroying their own city...well, if they belong there anyway.  I watched businesses board up windows on the news in preparation for the meetings...I just don't understand the violence.

Why don't these leaders pick a deserted island to have there little meet and greet?

It is so sad to see that people can be so destructive, when so much good could come out instead.   Sorry about Toronto....

Goes to show you how attached to the SOS of politics I am. I did not even know this was going on. I do not listen to the news. For the most part, it is the same ol' crap, just a different day...

Good morning Al & Peggy, this infuriates me. The thing is, these people can be found anywhere. And I will say, their political agendas change like the wind. Destroying their own city is just sick, they should cool their heels in jail for a while, a long while. If we all changed to wind powered energy they would protest for some unknown reason, of this I am sure.

And honestly, my own feelings are that we are all guilty. We all rode the wave. There is no simple answer to any of our major problems, but behaving like a pack of wild, rabid dogs will not fix anything.

So sorry for the poor people who lost business over this. I am heading over to see what Terry C wrote about the "miscreants". I am just as mad as he sounds.

(But this is happening in Canada? Home of the worlds most polite people?)

What a bummer, that they have been upsetting a lot of your lives. I haven't been following it, I'm quite glad I'm far away from it. G8-G20 GONE!

Hi Al and Peggy,

Politics. Always brings out the worst in people.

In response to Andrea's comment about Canada being the home to the most polite people...could it be that Canadians are getting just a little tired of being stepped on by our own government and it's starting to show?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't condone the violence. I've never thought acting like a bunch of apes ever did any good - I'm just saying...

Al & Peggy, I came back because I got to thinking about the protesters and their "mob mentality".

I wonder if the mindless destruction caused by the protesters is the same kind of criminal acting out "mob mentality" that follows a Super Bowl victory or  NBA championship game or even a soccer match?  We've all seen cars turned over and set on fire; business windows broken; etc. when the sports fans team wins...do you think the individuals (who probably have little control in their own lives) feel they are now a part of something...kind of a look at me statement?

What ever it is I don't understand these idiots...just trying to figure them out...I'd rather throw them in jail!

Like Nick, I had to come back. It is a mob mentality, and as Pam pointed out, Canadians, like us here in the US are tired of being stepped on. Some ways you can't blame them, but honestly, behaving like morons is not the way to get anything. I still have the dreamy eyed vision that Canada is problem free, you know? Left over from the days so many from the US were dreaming to move there and solve all their problems, draft included.

We need solutions, not protests. Ahhh.. don't get me started. I got started earlier today, LOL.

I just never understood a mob mentality, nor have I ever understood how those people that are elected by the people, for the people can be so damn stupid once they take office.

We are all frustrated, so lets be part of the solution, cuz if you ain't part of the solution..... you are...

One big pain in the ass butt problem to the rest of us!

Exactly George! This is just outrageous and so unbelievable!

We know Laura, we are just not used to this our 'Toronto the Good'. Mesmerizing isn't it and not for the right reasons, it is for the shock value. This just doesn't happen here and shouldn't!

Agree Nick, we were just saying that it was bad timing having the G8 and G20 here while the World Soccer was going on and that was bad enough for the businesses who were counting on making a few extra bucks, but now they are boarding up for safety!

Let it rip Terry! This is absolutely unbelievable that these people think destruction is the way to get a point across!

Absolutely Dagny! The worst part is, we know that some of these demontrators are just paid people to attend, cause disruption and get the body count up!! To impress who, we wonder!

We don't listen to the news anymore either Michael because we agree with you. But something this big happening in your own City is hard to ignore.

This is what is so shocking to us Andrea! Last year a major newspaper dropped 20 wallets around the City to see what would happen. 80%  were returned intact.  Toronto is a great City. This is so abnormal. Today the protesters are complaining after one of them fell over as an officer was arresting or detaining them.  Really? They can complain about this? They pulled an officer off his horse! They burned a police car! Destroyed a Starbucks store! So much more and they can complain? Please!

We think so too Ellen and as Nick said, why don't they go to a deserted island somewhere! This has just caused chaos! The worst of it? We don't even know what they were protesting about!

If they are Pam, this is not the way to handle it. Though the news is reporting that 500 were arrested among them are people not from around here.

Hey Nick, glad to see you are back. We were late getting here.  You could be right aabout that mob mentality! 500 or so were arrested, but they are not locked up long enough. We need some of your Chicago boys here!

Can't add anything to what you commented Andrea! It was all very well said. Thanks for coming back!

I only saw a little on the news last night and missed the point of the protest. I was shocked by the behavior - most of us are angry about something..but most of us don't act it out in the streets- thank goodness! I hope things get back to normal in Toronto, soon.

Al and Peggy,

I also hope things get back to normal in the streets of Toronto.   It is bad timing to have it in downtown TO and negatively impact the businesses by shutting down some streets for several days.

Thank you for making me smile with your comment #1.  :)

I have not been as up on the news as everyone else but have been just shocked and horrified by what little I have seen.  I hope the city gets back to normal soon and that everyone stays safe.  I had to watch the video a second time to know you were kidding.   :-)
