Are you traveling to Maui, Hawaii in the near or distant future?
I would like to share a few of my favorite things on the island.. After just returning from a short trip that combined work- Looking for a broker/leader in the state of Hawaii for my company and spending quality time with my daughter I just have to tell you about these fantastic things..
First, this was the first time staying on the other side of the island known as Lahaina/Kaanapali.. I use to live on the southern part of the island known as Kihei, so I will stick to those areas since that is where you usually end up.
We stayed at the The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas which has great package currently available..credit for car rental and more..
It is hotel-condo so you can cook in your unit if you would like to save on restaurant bills. Check on maid service when you check in.. your unit may have its own washer/dryer..
As far as check in be prepared to wait for your room.. We arrived on an early flight and ended up having to wait until our room was ready at 4pm. so bring a bag with your bikini and suntan product and wait casually by the pool :)
Check out the free shuttle service for these Starwood Resorts. It is fantastic! It travels on the hour and in 20min intervals depending on destination. My daughter and I used this frequently and the drivers are super friendly and helpful when looking for a specific place..You go to the Sheraton, and Westin Hotel (yes there are two in Kaanapali) for route one, and route two takes you to Lahaina.
One of those requests was the location of Maui Tacos one of our favorite places to eat..They have them all over the island so enjoy any one of them and have some extra salsa for me!
It is also perfect if you want to make a trip to the grocery store, since the shuttle circles every 20 to 60 minutes it is a snap. We stocked up on Pog, eggs, english muffins, ham and cheese for our own little egg sandwich each morning.
We discovered a new favorite this visit and that was located at Whalers Village. It is a self serve frozen yogurt shop called Yogurtland. We would take the shuttle from the hotel and enjoy a cool treat in the afternoon..perfect.
On advice from a gal I met recently on a dive trip bring lots of one dollar bills when traveling. This helps with housekeeping and valet tipping. If maid service is something you enjoy be sure to leave money for them each day, since staff may be different each day, also they usually do extra nice things if you appreciate them:) same goes for the valet!
Now a few more of my favorite things in Kihei
Maui Custom Beachwear
I have known Keiko the owner for many years, she opened her shop in the Rainbow Mall coming from the hectic life of a wedding dressmaker in LA to a more laid back style on Maui. She makes custom suits to fit your body and you choose the material.. Keiko designed one for me when I was pregnant many years ago...when there was really no such thing to be found.
Then of course I did the natural thing and had matching suits made for Mom/daughters as well. She is super friendly and makes everyone feel like a star:) She also has designs that she sells on the rack, this time around my daughter found a cute tye-dye top that was just perfect.. no I didn't get one to match:)....
She definitely has a following, she is still there and just as wonderful as the day I met her over 20 years ago:)
This one is near and dear, I actually worked for David and Nancy when they opened their shop.. David is a master goldsmith and Nancy is just well..amazing..They create their own designs as well as selling fabulous pieces.
They recently moved locations to the Dolphin Plaza in Kihei and this is where I walked in to say hello this trip. It is always wonderful to catch up and see what their children are up to.. I used to watch over them in the shop way back...
They are a family at Topaz and will make you feel welcome right away.
Of course she takes one look at my rings and says let me have those so I can get them all polished for you..this I know is a ploy to have me stick around and visit while looking at all the pretty things in the case but I don't mind since I am here to visit and they do have lots of beautiful things to look at:)
If you have something to create, they will also work through the design and then David sets to work, he created a wonderful turtle piece for me, from a photo that my husband took. David is also a painter so you may see some of his work hanging on the walls too! As an added thought, if you have a string of pearls that are in need of say re-stringing.. let Nancy take care of that. She is fantastic!
So please stop by and say that Katharine sent you!
What more can I say.. Everyone loves pizza! and if you don't care for pizza they make the best philly cheesesteak sandwiches on the island.. Actually that is what I go there for..
Now who doesn't like a Massage... This is the ultimate splurge.. they do run specials in the inflight magazines and online for couples, teens ect that are actually quite reasonable considering all the amenities that are a part of the experience.
This is most amazing spa I have been to and would consider it a whole day affair.. You are going to want to enjoy every minute, every pool, every thing..
I hope you have enjoyed a few of my favorite things...
feel free to add comments on your favorite spots as well..
