Customer Service as Customer Abuse? What, if anything, are they THINKING?

Fumble drills in Corporate marketing materials and public image building.  It is so fascinating to see a major corporation shoot themselves in the foot over a couple of bucks, or for a stupid policy, or just because they think no one will notice.

Ebay:

I have been a happy Ebay buyer for about 4 years.  All in all it has been a good experience, a very good experience even.  I put my success and satisfaction rate at 99% or better.  So, I turn to Ebay quite often when I want something that I think I can't find in typical retail or on line shopping.  It has worked well.  I often refer people to Ebay for purchases.  It has been fun, too, something I don't have at Big Box stores very often.

It has worked well enough that after 130+ transactions, paid in full, I received a notice from PayPal, Ebay's payment system telling me that they need to improve it:

"Hello Mike Jaquish,

We wanted to let you know that (we think you are really dull) you're just $228.16 USD away from hitting your initial PayPal sending limit of $10,000.00 USD. This is the maximum amount of money you can send or use for purchases before you need to become Verified.

Why do I need to verify my account?

We place initial limits on all accounts to increase security and help prevent fraud. Once you link and confirm a bank account or get approved for PayPal credit, your account will be Verified and you'll be able to make as many payments as you like with PayPal."

So, after 4 years of reliable immediate payment, from the same credit card account, with no complaint of fraud and no security issues, they tell me they must "Verify" me.  They have to get their fingers into my bank account, or I have to have THEIR credit card.  "Give us the keys to your kingdom or no more Dell computer auction bidding for YOU!  You may NOT give us $10,000 again unless we feel secure!"

Did George Orwell just make it onto the Ebay board of directors?  The doublespeak is mind-bending.  They can "Verify" all they want.  And I can "Vilify."  Dumb, dumb, dumb Ebay.  Are you also telling your Sellers that you are pro-actively turning away buyers with 100% ratings ("Pays Lightning Fast!!!!")??  Buyers who have spent $10,000 on auctions and Buy It Nows?  Why not?

Verizon:

Better yet, is this Verizon kerfuffle over a lousy $350.  Was anyone sober the day they put their heads together and decided, "Let's abuse young war widows for cheap publicity?"  Nice brainstorm folks.

"Die Fighting in Afghanistan, Pay $350 Early Termination Fee."  GREAT PR Headline!!!!  A lesser vendor with no "big picture" perspective would have sent flowers, condolences, support, etc.  But this nimble multi-, multi-billion dollar firm is quick to protect the franchise.

To Verizon's Credit, they backpedaled and reconsidered.  But, they surely need to empower frontline customer service to offer a little empathy.

How does this fit into real estate?  I don't know, but I bet we must offer better customer/client service to stay in business.

Hi Mike - How timely that you wrote this. I have been at war with Verizon all weekend with no satisfaction whatsoever (not as dire as what you have written about, but just as stupid).  As soon as I can figure out how to avoid the early termination fee, they will be history in my book.  Does this have anything to do with real estate? Absolutely! We actually care about our clients.

Unfortunately, since eBay owns Paypal, they pretty much have a monoply. Even when you make a payment with your own credit card they try to get you to use your bank account for a prompt withdrawal, or use their credit card.

Peggy,

When VRZ bought Alltel, I bailed to Sprint, despite horror stories.  So far, so good.

Bill,

And the money handling is more profitable than the listing and selling fees, I guess.  So, if they can't have the money-handling money, curtail the market, I guess, is the policy.

Monopoly or almost there,  customer service goes out the window.  Recently had some of the same issues with Time Warner Cable, we have the complete bundle with them, and have had issues in the past with internet outage after thunderstorms.  Obviously a system issue and not a house issue.  Last week, three days in a row with an outage after a nightly storm.  If you call, 2-3 days to get someone out to your house.  On the other hand, their radio jingle "Call Today, Install Tomorrow" just drives me nuts.  An established customer can't get quick help, but a NEW customer can have someone there tomorrow.

Where's the sense in that?

You may have stepped into a bee's nest with this one. Everybody has a horror story about some company. I think your Verizon story might take the cake though.

Liz and Bill,

TWC is headed for trouble.  I will soon have a choice to give my $120/month to ATT for Uverse.  And TWC is marketing instead of servicing as a response to the thread.  Weak.

Julia,

Sure we all have stories.   These two just hit my radar nearly simultaneously.

Is it any wonder we are becoming a nation of cynics?   It seems that advertising and businesses are more blatent than ever with their advertising promises and lack of performance on service.  Sort of reminds you of our current political climate, doesn't it?

Yikes...i still don't get how Ebay really stays in business when they treat their buyers and sellers so poorly!   Problem is that there really isn't a better alternative!  I have a lot of crafting buddies who have had to really re-think their strategies as they were paying out so much in fees and they kept increasing....that they couldn't sell at prices that made sense!

Verizon and I have never got a long!  I have sprint...and I am not super thrilled all the time...especially with my 3g card...that will keep me logged on for 5 min and then kicks me off!  uuggghhh  but I keep hearing nightmare stories about the other companies so I will stick where I am!  for now anyway!

I know you are talking about ebay, but as for customer service, what do you think about the credit card business? After nearly 20 years of perfect  timely payments, our card holder raised interest rate to 20% when theya re getting their money practically for free? I called and tried to get the rate lowered, but no. I proceeded to  cut the card in tiny pieces and sent it to the company along with my final payment. If this is how good custosmers are treated, no thanks.

Allen,

I get good service from my company.  I think the interest rate is about 20%.

The secret is:  Never pay interest on Credit Cards.

Allen,

Can you imagine what would happen to our businesses if we treated customers like Pay Pal and Verizon are treating you? I think i would be broke.

Marcy,

It is all a "Reefer Madness" scenario... "Look kid, the first $10,000 is free.  After that, you have to pay."

After talking to a frustrated Jen, and her supervisor, "There is no Magic Button," Jason, I got to talk to Jason's boss, Rita, about the issue.

Rita committed to pass my idea on to management.  woo.   hoo.

I told all of them it would be fine to send me a credit card.  Really reached more than halfway across the void of service.  Not good enough.  I have to APPLY for the card they demand they send me.  That's fine.  They can send me the "George Orwell, 1984" vanity card.

I think I will have to apply for their credit card, which really is a slap in the face.

After giving them $10,000 in business in under 5 years, they tell me they need to ID me to protect against fraud.  Protect whom?  No one knew.  LOL

GE will LOVE my credit business when I start using the card for $0.89 candy bars. Hmmmm.  Maybe I will carry a $12.00 balance just to build a credit profile of on-time payment.
