Mesa AZ: Celebration of Freedom This Weekend

Mesa AZ is going to celebrate America's independence in a new way this year, with a goal of making a two-day event Arizona's biggest July 4th bash. Now, how can you tell if it is the biggest? That remains to be seen.

The Southwest Ambulance Celebration of Freedom will take place on downtown streets and is scheduled to fill the area with water features, food vendors and displays featuring U.S. history. The main highlight will be a Saturday fireworks show that includes pyrotechnics being shot from the top of buildings.

Let the Celebration Begin!

I heard about the event a month ago in the news, and wrote an AR blog about it. Then, I looked at the news and thought about it. Why not jump in and help with the event! And, as a bonus, I even get a T-Shirt. Hmmm... just what I need.

But no, it is not to gain just another T-Shirt, it is a chance to be downtown, meet some good people, and get a flavor of the event up close and personal. And, I am going to carry a pocketful of business cards, just in case.

The Sertoma Club was not able to muster and raise the $30k for their annual celebration. But the City of Mesa stepped in and raised $375k in monies and in-kind donations for the event. That sealed the deal.

The event time:

• The event runs 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

• Fireworks begin 9:30 p.m. Saturday, with pyrotechnics shot from the top of the Mesa Arts Center and Mesa City Plaza. A 20-minute fireworks show will be shot from south of downtown. The best viewing is along the north side of Main Street.

• Misting tents and misting fans will be set up to cool people. Kids can get soaked in several water features.

• Patriotic music performances begin at 6 p.m. inside the Mesa Arts Center.

• Plan to arrive early to find a parking space or consider using the LINK bus on Main Street. The service will run until 11 p.m.

I lived in Mesa from 2002-2004 and in Gold Canyon from 2004-2007.  Do I ever miss the wide open spaces of the west!

Michael, the wide spaces are unfortunately still wide and more open since we have slowed down quite a bit. But, this valley is so huge, more than 100 wide, that there is still inexpensive dirt avialable to build. Come back.. come back...;-)

At this time of year..??!  I'll definitely be back in the winter, hopefully this December.  But I'm not so sure that I want to suffer through another long valley summer.
