Connecting to your local community gives you something very important...visibility.
As a business owner you know the importance of keeping your prospective customers and clients informed about your organization's activities easily and consistently.
I love looking at community calendars especially on a weekend that we don't have any plans (rare but it does happen) as well as subscribing to many rss feeds for local community pages so that I'm aware of all the local events going on in my area and I don't think I'm alone in this when I look at all the people commenting on many of the local event pages.
But you might be missing out on reaching people from your local community that don't know you yet. (I know it sounds practically impossible with all the opportunities for reaching out to your communities, but why take the chance? Who knows you might just make a connection and gain a new customer!

is to become a regular on your local community websites and calendars:
Perhaps you have some local community pages that you use for linking purposes in your blogs - many of these sites have advertising and forum sections where you can advertise your next open house, seminar, and local event that you're hosting for free. (many also have feeds where you can submit your blog for even more local exposure)
The fact is, community websites and community calendars are becoming very popular.
