Man's Best Friend Died

By

After reading about Neal the Real Deal Bloom'sBlog on his Jack Russell Terrier, it made me want to comment on my son's dog.

Russell Terrier

My son and daughter in law owned a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier named Bailey. He was are very cute and smart little guy. He had beautiful markings.  Anyway, about 2 weeks ago they noticed that he was acting funny but didn't think nothing of it at first.

Then he started to walk kind of wobbly so the took him into the veterinary office. The Veterinary told my kids that Bailey has blatter stones. Blatter stones?  Okay.....so they did surgery on him. After they surgery they said  to take him home and give him the medication and he will be okay.

Well they brought him home and after two days he was not getting better. So they took him back to the veterinary office and they were told that his heart just gave out and couldn't take it.

What a sad time for my son and daughter in law. You have to understand this was their child. They have no human children. So needless to say they were very upset and distraught.

They were told that sometimes in Jack Russell's they (I guess they are talking about breeders) breed for beauty for show dogs a lot of times and end up breeding the sturdiness and health out of them. I don't know I'm not a breeder.

Anyway you can view a short video of my son holding Bailey over a pool and he starts moving his legs like he's swimming. Go to www.myspace.com/hansonhomes

Rest in peace Bailey!

Until next post.....

My kids are of the furry and four legged variety, too.

Please convey my sympathies to your son and daughter-in-law.

I am sorry to hear about the lose of their dog.  I think we can all relate as we all have probably lost a pet at one time or another.  It is a painful time but they will get through it.

Unfortunately, some breeders breed for the "outside" factor - coloring, markings, size, shape, etc and don't take into consideration the the "inside" factors - genetic diseases that may not manifest until the puppy (or in some instances kitten) matures.

Darrel -  Yeah it came as a real shock to happen so sudden. Thanks for the comment

Nancy - I sure will and even though I have adult kids I have four legged ones myself.

Linda - Thanks for thoughtfulness and your comments

Molly - I really didn't know that until my son told me what the vet told him. It sad that a breeder can't breed for both looks and health and sturdyness.

It is always so sad when a beloved pet (or child in this case) passes.  I'm leery about having a pure bred animal for the very reason you mentioned -- they're bred too much.  I hope that your son and his wife will be able to heal their heartache and remember the joy that Bailey brought them for three years.

Terry - Thanks for the advise I really didn't know about the genetic things. I appreciate you comment.

Jim & Maria - I think it's okay to have a purebred I have a purebred boxer and he is wonderful. I think you just have to be careful.

Penny -  I like that video too. He was so cute that day which was just this past July. I bet your little maltese is cute doing the same thing. Thanks for the comment.

Kelly - I sure will and it's true how our animals take on almost human behavior so I think that's why it so easy to feel so much for them. Thank you for the comment.

Sounds like a genetic defect. That is just terrible. We lost our poodle, Tess (in the pic) last year to cancer along with our elderly Corgi, Edward. When the time is right, they need to get another dog. I hope that they'll go to the shelter.  I know here in Las Vegas there are usually a Jack Russell or two there because they are definitely not for everyone. -Charles

Marcella, this is for you and anyone who has lost a ittle friend. It was given to me when I lost mine and I like to pass it on.

DOG'S DON'T HAVE SOULS, DO THEY???

I remember bringing  you home.  You were so small and cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur.  You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping.  Once in a while, you'd let out a little yelp just to let me know this was your territory.  Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight became a passion, and when I scolded you, you just put your head down and looked up at me with those innocent eyes.

As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at everyone who walked by.  When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting for me with your tail wagging.  When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap looking for attention.  You never asked for anything more than to have me pat your head so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.

As you got older, you moved around more slowly.  Then one day, old age finally took its toll, and you couldn't stand on those wobbly legs anymore.  I knelt down and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again.  You just looked up at me as if to say you were old and tired and that after all these years of not asking for anything, you had to ask me to do one more favor.

With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet.  One last time you were lying next to me.  For some strange reason you were able to stand up in the animal hospital - perhaps it was your sense of pride.  As the vet led you away, you stopped for an instant, turned your head and looked at me as if to say:  "Thank you for taking care of me".....

I thought;  "No - my very good friend, THANK YOU for taking care of ME".

Charles -  You are right that there was some sort of genetic defect. Bailey was just to young and he went to fast. I am sorry to hear about your dogs. I think they plan on getting one from a rescue or shelter when the time is right.            Puppy 2

SCOTT -  This was a very heart warming story and it touched me so much I almost started to cry while I was reading it. Thank you so much. I really appreciate this story. I will have to have my son and his wife read it. Thank you again for the great story I loved it.

Sorry I missed this and thanks for the mention.Sorry to hear about their loss..so sad when I read these. Roscoe keeps amazing us with 17 yrs and hopefully he can live a few more without too many of the physical problems he is having. He now is in the early stages of kidney failing and the start of cataracts. We are hoping for the best and at least he still is acting fairly well.

NEAL - You are very welcome. When I read your post on your dog it prompted me to post on my son's recent loss. 17 yrs for a dog is pretty old but I believe he can live quite a while. My mom had a dog that lived until she was almost 19 yrs old.  Thanks for commenting on my post.

Sadly..Roscoe had to be put down in Oct of 2008. He could no longer walk and although he wanted to eat...there was no way without our assistance. It was a very hard day for us and I had to have my wife take him because I had to work that day. I said my goodbyes in the morning. I locked myself in the house for a month. Fast foward to now..we have another dog now...shes great..just turned 3 and hopefully will live as long. Sh'es a mini schauzer and reminds us so much of the female version of him. I still think of him today and plan on getting a tattoo of him.
