Columbus, Ohio boasts one of the largest annual 4th of July fireworks shows in the U.S. People come from all over the state, as well as other points in the Midwest, to view this spectacular display of pyrotechnics and enjoy the special events. This year the Red White and Boom Fireworks were produced by Pyrotecnico, located in New Castle, Pennsylvania.
The 4th of July fireworks was held on Friday, July 2 in downtown Columbus near Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Attendance in past several years has exceeded 500,000 people, and this year was no exception. Red, White and Boom, which is a take-off of the "red, white, and blue" of the Amerian flag, began in Columbus in 1981. It is sponsored by a local TV station (Channel 4 NBC), along with many corporate sponsors and organized through contributions and promotional support of various Columbus businesses.
Brave "boomers" stake out the prime locations in the early morning hours in order to obtain the best vantage point for viewing the fireworks. Many make an entire day of the event, enjoying the festivities at different venues throughout the area, starting mid-morning and extending well into the night.
Prior to the fireworks display, attendees can walk down the Midway, enjoying the many exhibits, and feast on a wide variety of "fair" food. There is also an Independence Day Parage, featuring 80 entries, with over 125,000 parade-goers lining the parade route.
Those watching by TV can enjoy commentary and special interest features from local Channel 4 TV celebrities, as well as a rousing video salute to our military heroes from the central Ohio area who are currently serving or formerly served in different branches of the military.
The day's festivities culminate with a powerful display of pyrotechnic genius, ending with a three-minute Grand Finale. The fireworks, which takes about 30 hours to choreograph, is set to music ranging from Lee Underwood to Miley Cyrus. All in all, it is a spectacle that brings joy to the hearts of children and adults as well.
