Old Glory Is Leaving Our Solar System

July 4, 2010     That date sounds futuristic, doesn't it?  In the movie Star Trek: The Motion Picture Admiral James T. Kirk commandeered the USS Enterprise on a mission to save Earth from a fast approaching nemesis known as V'ger.  V'ger was later found to be the Voyager spacecraft that had been launched by NASA in 1977 and was completing it's mission by returning home.

Today Americans the world over will display their flag proudly, but the flag furthest from home is on board the Voyager I spacecraft.  Currently over 10 billion miles from home the 33-year-old space probe is on the outskirts of our solar system.  Ben Franklin, George Washington and John Adams surely never envisioned any of this over 230 years ago.

Happy Birthday America, and may the United States live long and prosper
