Who remembers El Charro? Searcy Arkansas had a great Mexican food restaurant.

El Charro Searcy Ar

Remember this delightful restaurant?  It was probably Searcy's first Mexican food restaurant and I remember it fondly.  However, I'd forgotten how it looked.  I vaguely remembered driving out East Race Street and pulling into the parking lot.  The whole thing is gone now.  I can't remember exactly where it was located.

It had 150 seating capacity and did business in the same location for 17 years.  This picture and history was in a 1981 real estate brochure offering it for sale.  No price was listed and the address was not listed.  In fact, the entire brochure had great pictures but no addresses. The office wanted that phone to ring!

This restaurant was operated by Buell Max and Foncine Gillham.  They cooked both on the premises and at their home on a lake and served excellent food always.

And don't tell this to everyone but things were different way back then.  They sorta had a BYOB policy.  That means "Bring your own bottle."  sssshhhhh!  In a dry county like ours you can't order a drink with your dinner.  The owners of some restaurants were permissive and would bring you a glass of ice and politely not notice if a bottle of spirits came out from under the table and filled the glass.

Everyone in Searcy loved El Charro and the Gillhams.  This memory of old Searcy is a good one.

Godmother,

Godson remembers the stories about that place. You bet he does.

I'm writing from Minnesota:   sadly Buel Max is a pt. in the same nursing home where Mother was.  I would see him every time I visited mother.  He is well cared for, in a private room and whenever I would see him, my mouth would water thinking about the good Mexican food he and Fonzine served up.  Thanks for the memories, AGAIN, Barbara.

Steven, tell Nutsy that I also vaguely remember a dancing flamingo squirlt at the restaurant.  It must have been his relative.  Then again it may have been caused by the spirits under the table.  LOL

Anita, I'm glad you remember.  I was afraid that this was during the time you were being a Northener.  I didn't know Buel Max was in the nursing home.  I hope he realizes how much we all loved his cooking.

The food was so good at ElCharro.  I sure wish I had the recipe for the flat tortilla with the cheese melted on the top.  I will have to ask his 2nd wife (Dotie) if she has any of the recipes.

Sherry, that's a good idea.  We might as well point out, too, that Foncine died a few years ago.  I'm glad he found Dotie after Fonzine was gone.  Did you actually remember what the building looked like?

Barbara,

I will vouch for him. We were both there the same night.

You all are going to think I never lived in Searcy.  I do not remember El Charro or that building at all.  Any idea of the exact location or anything that may have been around it?  When I drive west on Race St. from the freeway, I always try to figure out where the Pit was...and where the Dixie Drive-In was....and cannot.  Amazing!  I also try to imagine where the Wheat Motel was....anyone remember that?

Billy, this must have been a restaurant that opened after you left Searcy.  This picture was 1981 when it was for sale.  If it had been in business for 17 years that would have made it opening in the early 60's.  Were you still around?  I also have the same trouble you do about driving out Race and not remembering what was where.  I never heard of the Wheat Motel!  Dixie Drive In was, I think, right behind Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I remember you could watch the movie at the Dixie Drive-In from the parking lot of McEuen's Funeral Home on Moore street. Not that I ever did it though! That would put the drive-in behind where the KFC is today. I spoke recently with Mr. Carl "Bubba" Lewis of Searcy and he told me he saved the merry-go-round (or is it a Ferris wheel?) that sat in the playground of the Dixie Drive-In. The playground was located directly in front of the screen so paarents could keep an eye on their kids while they enjoyed the movie. He lets the kids in his neighborhood ride it occasionally. Mr. Lewis was a coach for the Searcy Flooring and Capp's Motor Company Cougars of the early peewee football days (1969-71).

Cliff, I somehow overlooked your comment on this blog.  That's a good memory.

Linda, that would have been close to your house??

My mom Nancy Pool. And her friend Rita were the servers. I played and grew up in the restaurant and the Gillhams. Great memories

My first Mexican food and I still miss it. I tend to judge every Mexican food restaurant by their standards and they always come up short. I would also love to have their recipes and the cheese tostada was a favorite.
