Smartphone Advice from one ActiveRainer to Another

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Moby

It seems as though people are dropping feature phones like they are made of hot iron (For all of you tech gurus with bad memory, feature phones are simple wireless phones that are only able to call or text and support games such as snake).

The other day we came across quite a useful Smartphone study conducted by comScore. As you can see in this chart, Smartphones have experienced a growth rate of 8.5% this past year. Considering the cost of buying a Smartphone, and the cost of the monthly plans, this is quite an impressive growth. This number is only going to get bigger as Smartphones become both cheaper and easier to own.

comScore:Smartphone vs. Feature Phone Market Share Trend

As you all know, last week we created a Smartphone Guide for Realtors blog post, where we wanted everyone to give their two cents on which Smartphone platform is the best. Below are the results of our poll:

Consistent with the general population, the ActiveRain market is dominated by the BlackBerry, iPhone and Android.

Moby Survey: Which Smartphone Platform do ActiveRainers Use

Although the majority of our fellow ActiveRainers use a BlackBerry, many of these users have discussed changing their Smartphone, reflecting the general trend of BlackBerry ownership. What is also interesting in the comScore chart below is how Microsoft went from 25% market ownership to around 15%, and Apple seems to have increased its marketshare by 5% (and this is before the release of the iPhone 4G).

comScore: Smartphone Platform Market Share Trend

Considering this study was conducted prior to the launch of some pretty impressive Smartphones, the next question to ask our fellow ActiveRainers would be whether there will be a change in the ActiveRain Smartphone market this year? Let us know what you plan on doing:

A big thank you to all of you who have commented on our last post, and gave us the inspiration to write this post! Stay tuned for Part-2: Why should I choose this Smartphone?

Take care and be safe everyone!

Moby..  Not that I'm old school, because I love technology.  However, I have the OLD and I can't stress that enough, Motorola E815.  I've tried many times to up grade to a new phone.  I've lost count, but last time I knew it was 7 different phones in the last 2 years.

Not one of them can compare to the reception I have with the E815.  I can be in a building with concrete walls, and I have a signal.. the Blackberry, LG's you name it, don't.  In some cases I've had to be in a parking lot to receive a call.

This is not good technology.. it seems like it has gone backwards instead of forward.  So for now, I'll sticking with what I have.

Andrew, thanks for your input!

Valerie, great comment! No point in having the best technology if you cannot use it... Hopefully in the future there will be much better reception in your area.

Nice Post,

I did not vote in your previous post. My phone is a Blackberry Bold. I upgraded from a smaller  Blackberry after trying the Android for two weeks of Hell.

The Androids email was much poorer. ( I have all my emails routed to my Blackberry and they tend to arrive with in two minutes or so of arriving at the server.)

Then Android battery also would not even make it through the day before needing a full charge. My Bold lasts about 3 days between charges.

Did not find any applications on the android for real estate that I could not live with out.

Times are always changing though so who knows what the future will hold.

Wallace, it seems a lot of ActiveRainers are leaning towards the Droid or the iPhone. It will be interesting to see the results for this poll, so check-in on our next post to see which Smartphone Realtors here prefer.

Herb, you have got a valid point. There was a lot of media attention surrounding the poor battery life of the Android.

Kate, which platform will you be upgrading to?

Thanks for sharing this information.  It's always good to see what's causing an upward trend.

Gary, glad your phone is not causing you trouble.

Apart from the Smartphone model itself, a persons use of the phone can have a big impact on its battery life. A phone's battery will not last very long if  you do not charge it proprely (lets say you charge it for too long, or you are not charging it fully) or if you use it for apps that require a lot of battery energy (such as videos or games).

I use the DROID and love it.  The iPhone is big but I expect the Android systems to overtake the market soon.  Mostly because every carrier can have one.

I agree with Gene that Android will be the #1 by the end of 2011.  I switched to the EVO the day it came out and LOVE It so much I became a reseller for Sprint (since they also offer discounts to NAR members)!  If you want to be a pure geek, you can always download your favorite VOIP software to an iPad and have an iPhone on Steroids! LOL

Thanks for the posts Moby.  I didn't see them originally, so I just subscribed to your posts.

Happy New Year from Boise, Idaho!
