Another Case In Point about Why Homeowners Don't Know They Can Do A Short Sale

Another case in point about why homeowners don't know that they can do a short sale!

Where do the reporters get their information and how do they check their facts or do they? Are they running against time lines so they don't have time to check?

When something is an opinion, preface it so. If something is a fact, check the facts. Perhaps more reporters should come to Active Rain for their fact checking. They may just learn a thing or two.

There was an article in the Orlando Sentinel about the Central Florida real estate market. The reporter goes into what a short sale is, how many short sales there are in Central Florida and then goes on to use fear to keep her readers engaged. I don't know any other way to put it. She quotes an attorney who is putting down Realtors®. In fact, it is interesting that she gets her real estate data from the Orlando Realtors but then quotes an attorney bashing realtors doing short sales.

This attorney says, " ...These people who use Realtors® to advise them on the transactions can end up facing deficiencies..."

Well, we are very clear to explain all the options and all the consequences a homeowner may face after a short sale. But what this reporter than does not say is that the alternative is foreclosure and no one is talking about what the homeowner will be facing after a foreclosure!

Then she portrays another real estate agent in her article- an agent who talks about how she almost loses a sale because of a second mortgage but that the buyer wanted the house bad enough they paid the second off.

Are you telling me that in the Central Florida area she could not find a realtor® smart enough to answer her questions about short sales and how the seconds get negotiated?

The article is the same article where she quotes the Chase VP from the Chase Homeownership Center in Orlando. I wrote a post about his statement, "Chase Chimes in on Morals."

So instead of helping homeowners find the information to help them to do a short sale this reporter is scaring them into NOT doing a short sale or feeling like they can not do one.

So let's keep writing about doing short sales here on Active Rain so the sellers can find out that they can do a short sale even if they are a strategic seller if they are willing to cooperate and perhaps participate. They may relate to one of our stories and call us!

So much for being a journalist.  I thought journalism was all about not taking sides, or being fair and balanced in reporting.  Obviously this "journalist" is brainwashed into thinking the banks are "the good guys".   Lazy, lazy, lazy journalist!

Katerina - oh, this is no surprise to me. It's just another example of inept reporting without regard to facts, and likely based on a preconceived opinion rather than truly "reporting the facts." So sad that this continues in today's world when we know so much more about short sales and the plight of homeowners who CAN get help in many cases.

Sad, too, is the fact that many will likely read this so called journalism and believe it is so. Thank goodness there are agents like you in your area who CAN and DO help so many.

I believe it's important to bring these stories forward so homeonwers can get the truth and not be misled by irresponsible journalism for the sake of an article and a by-line.

Kent- lazy, I did not think about that but you are most likely spot on about that.

I will tell you that even Money magazine called me to answer questions about Wellington, I was interested in helping but I did wonder why she did not ask me to back up the facts. Hmmmm.

Jeff- very sad indeed. That is one more reason why active rain's google juice is a good thing- more sellers can find us here and find out the truth. I am so sick of these reporters who don't care enough to even fact check. And then to put up Chase as some authority on short sales! WOW!

A few times in my life, I've been where a news story is happening. In every single case, what was reported was NOT the truth but an exagerration to make it more interesting to the reader. Some "hook" to draw the reader in. How come there is just enough news to fill the paper everyday? Why does the "nightly news" always take exactly 1 hour with commercials? The media is deciding what is news and what is not based on interest value so it is often entertainment value. No wonder I went to the door of one default notice house recently and the homeowner told me she was told she would go to jail if she did a short sale.

Hi, Katerina!  You know you love me!  I was just wondering as I was reading this...who owns the media outlets?  The same people who own the politicians?  I think...YES!

So, therefore, perhaps this little tidbit of "journalism" is one of the first steps being taken by the major banks in "spinning" the short sale game.  You know, I love a good conspiracy!

I think this goes back to our earlier discussion about "morality", but not morality so much as a sense of preserving the American dream...and I don't mean just the one about homeownership!

If the homeowners are to act in their own self interest, why would banks be any different and vice versa?  My whole argument is that somewhere, someone is going to have to step up if we have any hope of stopping the bleeding.

Still SLIP SLIDIN' AWAY...This is not going to end well.

Jenna- ;)

Well, I am often called a conspiracy believer. What I wonder though, is what then do they call me after what I said was going to happen, happens? Am I still a conspiracy believer? THe conspiracy accusing tactic is one of Cat Sunstien's favorite moves and also it is a Salinsky tactic. ( spelling of their names?)

THe truth is there are people in high places that still think we can succeed where USSR failed. Read: The Forgotten Man.

Fannie and Freddie are so above the law- they will own 96% of all mortgage backed securities within the next 2 years- Fannie is now the largest leasing landlord and the US gov't now owns more real estate than the private sector. Hmmm, is there a plan in all of that? Was that just a coincidence? Hmmm.

Katerina,

No it was not a coincidence.

Just like I got blasted for proclaiming HAMP a publicity stunt, the tune changes with the circumstances.

Remember the 1970s movie, NETWORK?  Definitely worth a look today!

Jenna- Of course HAMP was a publicity stunt! It was also smoke and mirrors. Look here guys, while we do something else over here where you are not looking. I think most people don't want to believe that there are evil people and that there are people who want to be in control. The elitists think of us as peons, serfs and just something that gets in their way. The look down their noses at us while they close the door so no one else can get in.
