Turtle Versus Tortoise

By
Home Inspector with King of the House Home Inspection, Inc. Home Inspector Lic #207

The photo below is of a really big turtle. Okay, this creature is not a turtle, it is a tortoise.

Actually, I did not know the difference myself. But the people at the Outback Christmas Tree and Kangaroo Farm, Arlington, WA,  explained the difference.

There might be more to it than this, but they said that turtles have feet designed for swimming and tortoises are made for walking. So this one is a walker.

Steven, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet".  Not that your buddy in the picture looks anything like a rose.

Did you also know tortoise and turtle both were created with shells for protection from certain types of rodents.

Howdy and evening to you Steven

That there sure is one mighty fine tortoise, that you took the photo of. When ever I see a turtle or tortoise corssing a road I'm on. I always stop on the side of the road, and get out to get it to the other side so they don't get ran over. I have seen folks go ouy of their to run over them before. And that sure pisses me off when I see someone do that.

Have a good one

Dale,

I get totally disgusted when people go out of their way to run over animals. I have seen that too and it makes me sick.

Dale and Steven it burns me up too when I see people trying to swerve to hit an animal... I too get out of my car and get turtles across the street. I have actually picked them up and relocated them to water canals, rivers, or what ever. I worry that turtles are territorial, however, putting them in a safe place is tops on my agenda.

And Steven that is one beautiful turtle!

This turtle keeps its home mighty clean.  I see no dirt.  Is it true that if a turtle is turned over on its back it will die because he can't flip?

Steve, interesting. I did not know that. Barbara, I saw a turtle flip yesterday and I watched it right it self. Could be just another old wives tale...
