Let's Go Hokies - We Remember Virginia Tech

VT MemorialAs I sat here this morning blogging away about the back-to-school "blahs" many of our children are going through and the euphoria many of us as parents are experiencing, it struck me quite suddenly how bitter-sweet this time is for most of us in the Virginia Tech community.

You see, my daughter is a rising senior at Virginia Tech.  And on that horrific morning back on April 16, 2007, my husband and I were enjoying a cup of coffee and our usual routine when we received the call.

"Mom, don't worry.  I'm o.k."  The time was 9:15am, only minutes before the second rampage was to begin and mark its place in history as the deadliest shooting in the US.

She lost a very close friend and fellow RA, Ryan Christopher Clark, who she was with only 8 hours before this nightmare began, and her favorite French Professor, Jocelyne Couture-Nowak.

I won't bother to describe the grief and anxiety we went through in those first 24 hours.  Instead, I ask that you all please say a prayer for those students, faculty and staff heading "Back-to-School" to Virginia Tech.  Their strength and resilience are absolutely amazing and eloquently and poignantly reflected in their Video Tribute

For those who have not seen it, I ask that you take a few minutes to reflect together and say a collective prayer.

God Bless!

Let's Go.....Hokies!

I am sure that your daughter has had a tough summer and my best wishes go out to all the families who were touched by this senseless tradegy.  For all of us with Hokie roots (we are two generations in our house) what happened in April will never be forgotten.  We are gearing up for Hookie Football and look forward to being on campus and knowing how resilient the students and community have been through all of this.  Hokie Hokie Hokie High...!

Go Hokies!  Be sure to watch for my nephew Blake DeChristopher (62) this season.  He is great! Now if only I can get some tickets for less than $200 a piece ( I have 4 kids).  We did get to go to the scrimmage this past weekend and it was a thrill.

Dawn, I hear you!  Our first year I could only afford 3 extra tickets (for $600 on e-Bay!) and I ended up walking around campus with my two younger kids while the game was going on.  To top it off, we had to stay in a hotel in Salem (60 miles away) because there were no rooms available!  VT is one tough ticket to get.  I'll be sure to look for Blake.  I know the team is the glue that the school needs right now.

Irene...Thanks for commenting on my St. Joes post. I usually respond to Commentors on their own sites so I can visit all the other AR communities. I live in VA for 10 years and it felt good taking a quick trip back (through your Blog) this morning.

Thanks for visiting, Geno.  I've done the same and enjoy your writing style tremendously!  And I love the references to your dear (dare I say) Italian mama!

Irene from what I have seen (very little) you are right.  The spirit and enthusiasm is phenominal.  We are going to get tickets for the Duke game on Oct 13th just so we are sure to see him play at least once.  We know it will not be the same as being in Lane Stadium surrounded by Hokies.

That should be a fun game to go see...you'll be amazed at how much Orange and Maroon you're going to see there!  Enjoy - hopefully, I'll be able to see it on TV.  By the way, I found this on the Hokie Sport's site (which I'm sure you've seen) but I wanted to share with other readers.  You and Ed must be VERY proud!  My husband was a college football player at Towson (back when it was Towson State - 1981 to 1985) and I thought he was enormous at 6'3" and 280 lbs!

Holy Moly...that's a lot of boy on the line!

Irene - Thanks for the comment.  His Grandpa Ed also played college footbal at Alfred University, NY (in the olden days) he was 6' 2" and 197 lbs and many thoght he was big.  Blake is truly a "gentle giant" until he puts on his pads.  Funny how hearing his name  on the news, reading about him in the paper, and on the net gives you such a thrill.  My son Ben (7) had him autograph the back of his Tech shirt last weekend and now refuses to wash it.
