As I sat here this morning blogging away about the back-to-school "blahs" many of our children are going through and the euphoria many of us as parents are experiencing, it struck me quite suddenly how bitter-sweet this time is for most of us in the Virginia Tech community.
You see, my daughter is a rising senior at Virginia Tech. And on that horrific morning back on April 16, 2007, my husband and I were enjoying a cup of coffee and our usual routine when we received the call.
"Mom, don't worry. I'm o.k." The time was 9:15am, only minutes before the second rampage was to begin and mark its place in history as the deadliest shooting in the US.
She lost a very close friend and fellow RA, Ryan Christopher Clark, who she was with only 8 hours before this nightmare began, and her favorite French Professor, Jocelyne Couture-Nowak.
I won't bother to describe the grief and anxiety we went through in those first 24 hours. Instead, I ask that you all please say a prayer for those students, faculty and staff heading "Back-to-School" to Virginia Tech. Their strength and resilience are absolutely amazing and eloquently and poignantly reflected in their Video Tribute.
For those who have not seen it, I ask that you take a few minutes to reflect together and say a collective prayer.
God Bless!
Let's Go.....Hokies!
