As a realtor with a Green designation I am always interested in the walkability factor of properties. Arlington, Va where I do alot of my work, is considered one of the most walkable cities in the country. Most of the development has happened along the metro corridor and where metro is not available, there is walk-to bus service and discussion about a trolley going into the Columbia Pike Corridor.
If you are considering a home or want to determine the "walkable" marketing potential of your existing home there is a website called http://www.walkscore.com. You can put the address of your property into the website and it will give it a walkability score and list and map restaurants, shopping, transit etc. that are within walking distance. I put in a property that I currently have listed at 2325 Taylor St. in Arlington, Va. It received a score of 66 out of 100 and was deemed somewhat walkable. Since I am very familiar with the area I know there were many walk to locations that web site did not use. I am not sure where the information comes from for the score but it is definitely not 100% accurate. However, it is an interesting tool. I am listing a condo that is very close to the metro this week. The address is 1200 Hartford St. Arlington, Va. When I plugged that one in, it received a walk score of 98 out of 100....a walkers paradise. The walkability location of these properties definitely add to the sales value in an area that has some of the worst traffic congestion in the anywhere. It's definitely worth checking out this website to see how your property scores.
