Rain Camp Portland ~ Camping and Rain Camp....what a blast!!!!
Last Wednesday I attended my first Rain Camp! The camp was in Portland and an event I was really looking forward to! And it didn't disappoint that is for sure! A bit of background might be in order. I REALLY wanted to go to Rain Camp. And I REALLY didn't want to travel alone. So I struck a deal with the hubby....he would drive me there IF I would be willing to go camping with him. Now I have only been camping once before, and that is a story in itself. Needless to say, it wasn't a favorable one. But I REALLY wanted to go to Rain Camp so off we went!!!
We left a few days early and headed for the Coast of Oregon. Man, is it beautiful. And yes, I not only handled camping well, but decided it was fantastic. So fantastic, that I decided to get up early on the day of Rain Camp to squeeze in all I could....
On Wednesday we got up bright and early as I was so excited and worried that I would oversleep that I didn't sleep much at all! I headed for the camp showers while hubby took down the tent. My faithful guide got me there bright and early. I was there! I was actually at my first Rain Camp!
It was everything I thought it would be and more. And I loved meeting the staff of Active Rain! Meeting Brad Andersohn was amazing. He came over to me and gave me a big hug! Really, Rain Camp is a family re-union. And I loved every minute of it! I loved meeting Kerrie Greenhalgh. She is as wonderful and bubbly in person as she is on her blogs. Of course, Bob Stewart was had a more pressing engagement!!! I think Christa would of killed him had he been at camp!!! LOL
And an amazing highlight is that Brad asked me to sit on the social panel with Todd Clark and Ken Rosengren. Silly me, I didn't even snap one picture the entire time I was there. But Todd graciously tracked down the picture for me. It was a great honor! Even if I was a bit tongue tied...imagine that!
So...what did I learn? Heck! What didn't I learn!!! Ben Kinney was amazing! I just sat there soaking it all in. Thus, I was so busy writing, I got absolutely no pictures!!! He of course, downloaded tons of stuff and some really great tools and some really great information. And if you haven't gone to Rain Camp...just do it! Really!!!!
I would like to just zero in on one concept that really struck me. And that is INFLUENCE. This one really blew me away....1 word of mouth referral is worth 200 ads. Just think about that for a moment. I know I have been thinking about it a lot.And of course, central to that is social media. With our blogs and facebook pages slowly but surely we develop an audience. And that is a good thing. Heck, that is a great thing!
But to be effective we need social interaction!!! We should not be talking at our audience but WITH our audience. Ask questions. Participation in conversations. Of course, both facebook and twitter are great ways to do that and so much more.
I personally enjoy the conversational nature of facebook, but to each his own. Ben said that facebook is growing at astronomical rates especially in 24-44 year olds. And although I might be a hair over that age bracket, I tend to see it myself. In fact, just this AM, I got a contact from a past client who is considering purchasing a lot. The conversation has begun....I can't wait to see the twists and turns as I try some new techniques!
What say you, what is one thing that impressed you the most at Rain Camp?
And if you haven't been, what would you most like to learn about?
