Green Streets in New York City

Lou Snitkin - New York apartmentsWith a land mass of 305 square miles, New York City is the most densely populated city in the country.  It's no wonder that our streets are constantly suffering the effects of heavy traffic. To be specific - the job of filling our potholes seems to an endless task.

Historically, the potholes have been filled with a toxic mixture of asphalt, kerosene, and diesel fuel.  Environmentalists have been working to pressure the industry to come up with a cleaner alternative, and Cold Mix Manufacturing (a small company in Queens) took on the challenge.  They have developed the first eco-friendly asphalt product, called GreenPatch, which contains no petroleum products and does not produce noxious fumes.

Their investment in R&D has paid off, because ConEd has signed a contract to use GreeenPatch exclusively in its road work. The New York City DOT is now testing GreenPatch around the city.

Krista - New York is actually greener than most people would think.  We still have a long way to go, but I've started to see recycle bins for bottles/cans and newspapers appear on street corners here-and-there around Manhattan.

Interesting post - Great idea - I'm just 20 miles away in Westchester.  We do have a similar issue, though it is not nearly as dense as NYC.

"Mayor Joe" did a good job on downtown White Plains, but some of the side streets in the area definitely need some TLC.
