Is today a FroYo day?

Android phone users like myself have been anxiously awaiting the upgrade to the newest update to our phones- Android 2.2 (nicknamed 'FroYo'.)  The pastry chefs at Google Inc. must be fantastic.  The last update was nicknamed 'Cupcake'.

On a side note:  Check this out if you've ever wondered about the perks of working at Google.  Prepare to be jealous though!

Motorola Droid set for an upgradeRumors have been flying around the net as to when this latest update would be coming to the Motorola Droid (it has already been released to Google's Nexus One phone of course!)The latest of which said we could look for the update on July 13th... yes... TODAY!!

What's to love about this update?  Ah... let me count the ways...

  • GO Speed Racer, Go! The newer compiler will allow a 2 - 5 time increase in the speed at which your phone works.  Not just in the general operating system but the apps as well.  The new browser is touted to be the fastest mobile browser available
  • Support for Adobe Flash allowing web pages and apps previously unusable on the phone to function.
  • Cloud to Phone computing.  Going out on showings?  Plan your route on your desktop in Google Maps and send it to your phone's navigation!
  • Tethering - your phone can now be used as a portable wi-fi hotspot allowing you to share your wireless connection with other devices.
  • Upping the ante on apps- In addition to a new web based Android market, you will now have the ability to store apps on your SD card and also to set your apps to auto update.  My notifications screen tells me I have 41 app updates currently available.  Rather than go to each of them separately, I'm hanging in there waiting for the day I can go in, do them all at once, and then set them to auto update.   Win.
There are many other features of less interest to me like a better sync for the music player and an updated user interface (that I'm not sure I'll care for), but the good definitely outweighs the bad in my opinion.

We are about halfway though the day with no update yet but I will keep you posted.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well :(  I miss our breaks too!  Google is beta testing a program that allows you to write your own apps for your phone- no programing required.  Once I get that, my geekiness will know no limits lol!!

I guess there is a little competition between the Android and the iPhone. I wonder if Android will eventually take some market share from Apple?

John:  Definitely though both are nice phones.  To me it was a no brainer as I have always had Verizon for cell service and am pleased with my signal.  Also, and probably even more so, Most of my stuff was already Google based (home and work email, contacts, pictures, etc) so it made more sense for me to go with the phone that syncs so easily with my already established accounts.  I own stock in both Apple and Google so I don't care what people buy... as long as they do ;)

Also... still no update yet :(  I'm a  Sad Panda :(

Margaret:  Reel 'em in with an interesting and unusual title.  Might not be the best for SEO but a throw back I learnedwaaay back from writing on my high school newspaper.

Joshua:  Thanks!

Still no update though :(

Thanks JL... still waiting.  It is my first 'smart phone' and I've come to expect a lot from the Google geniuses  in general so I have high standards for it!

John, They are both good phones.  Though I'm not sure that I care for the iPhone 4's new glass body.  Sounds like I would break it pretty easily.  Apparently it's made of a type of  aviation glass that is more durable and scratch resistant and less prone to show fingerprints.  I am glad they decided to send people who ordered the new iPhone cases to help correct the antenna problem... you know, the one they denied for so long ;)

Gary,

I am SOO jealous.  I have been reading all the Froyo reviews from the Nexus One users and everyone seems to love it.  I keep getting more and more tempted to root my phone and manually install the update but I'm too scared my phone would go permanently into 'paperweight mode' !  The 13th was based on web rumors but Verizon it's self has said several times 'July' so I guess only 12 days left at most.  **Crosses fingers**
