WICHITA IS MOVING TO SHELL KNOB
It seems like the majority of people living in or moving to Shell Knob, MO are from Wichita, Kansas. Shell Knob has justifiably gotten the name "Little Wichita". Probably due to Shell knob and Table Rock Lake being an easy drive from the Sunflower State.
Locals know where someone is from by watching how they drive our Ozark hills and curves.
Kansas is noted for being flatland. Sure they have a few hills, but our roads can make strangers very nervous - and it may take a while for newbies to become comfortable, especially with night driving.
First off, there is a lack of shoulder space on the roads... meaning there are NO shoulders.
I saw a car yesterday, come to a complete stop on a 2 lane State Highway, because a large truck was coming from the opposite direction! This same driver dropped from the posted 55 mph to 30 mph at each curve in the road. I didn't need to look at the license plate to know they weren't locals.
Until you've driven roads here a few times, it seems to instill fear when coming to the top of a hill that you will drop off into space - like will there be a road on the back side of the hill? It's the same feeling you get when you slowly come to the top of the big hill on a roller coaster. You can't see the other side of the hill, but after driving it a few times you get enough faith in the road to even drive after dark.
Besides the hills, there are the curves, and it is the curves that cause so many problems.... stomach problems. I felt sorry for an EMT ambulance driver recently, who told me she dreaded doing her rotation time in Shell Knob due to her sensitivity and tendancy to motion sickness.
The good news is that you do get used to both the hills and the curves, so we continue to appeal to buyers from Wichita. It is the beauty of the hills, along with the curving roads that draws them back.
