Stop Freakin....

Beacon Plumbing Truck

I had a great social media marketing conversation in Spanaway this morning with some clients at Crescent Realty. We were talking about how search engines work, how to develop an online presence, and creating your own personal brand. It was a fun and lively conversation.

On the way back to the office I was replaying in my mind some of what we talked about when I came up next to the Beacon Plumbing Truck. How apropos. What a great example of what we were talking about. Beacon Plumbing is a familiar icon in the Puget Sound area. Instantly recognized and hard to forget.

A few years ago they launched a very successful ad campaign that really stuck... a great job of branding I think. It's definitely sticky as they say. If you're from around these parts you instantly recognize
their signature line... "Stop Freakin, call Beacon!"

There's a real marketing nugget here for all of us in the real estate related industries. Something direct, simple, hits the target, easy to remember, and hard to forget. It also plucks an emotional chord we can all relate to.

You can Google simply, Stop Freakin, and look what you get as the #1 result

It's marketing at its best. Now I'll never be able to get that catchphrase out of my head.

Hi René,

The good trademark can be such a game changes if one is lucky enough to have one in real estate. I have thought about for years and well, I still don't have one!

We all look for that magic marketing message that hits a cord with our clients, Beacon clearly did that and look how long they have been around. A good memorable message or jingle can go a very long way.

Sara: Indeed... (ha)...

Evelyn: Their commercials are pretty funny. What I love is how simple it is.

Christie: The very essence of branding, right? Super Simple!

Joshua: Yes it is... What's cool is how it appeals to us all, we've all been there with a plumbing challenge.

Richard: They got you two! Now that I've blogged this, it's running through my head now for 2 days!

William: Me either, though I've come up with a couple great one's for companies I have worked for in the past... Now I need one for me :o)

Heather: Yes... They really got it on this one. I remember them as a very small company years ago. They've grown to a good size and you see their trucks frequently around the area.

Todd: And its simplicity gives it longevity for sure. Simple always wins the day.

You all missed out on the real brilliance of the "Stop Freakin Call Beacon" advertising campaign...

You might ask yourselves how a "Local Plumbing Company" could support such a heavy advertising campaign that branded them so well, even "Nationwide Plumbing Companies' don't run their campaigns that heavily. When was the last time you heard "Away Goes Trouble Down The Drain" on TV or, Radio? Roto Rooter doesn't sponsor an Unlimited Hydroplane Racing Team either...

Branding costs a lot of money to get it stuck! Roto Rooter paid the money, got their branding stuck in a great success but that pales in comparison to Beacon Plumbing.

Your post in July 2010 illustrates the real brilliance of the "Stop Freakin Call Beacon" branding efforts....

One year and 4 months after the Chapter 11 Bankrupcy of Beacon Plumbing with $0.00 in assets they are driving down the road "Branded" with over $3M of the costs of branding washed away....

That Gentlemen is true brilliance!

Red: Thanks for the comment. I didn't know about the bankrupcy. Interesting take on their brilliance. They did manage to create a brand the outshown Roto Rooter...
