I recently read an article in the Business & Real Estate section of the Tico Times that the founder of AOL, Steve Case, is planning an $800 million development in the Northwestern part of the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Hmmmm... That's a long way to go from being a pioneer of the Internet to a pioneer of Costa Rica!
I guess though, it may not be so far off. I actually came from the IT (Information Technology) industry and I am now working in the real estate industry. I know that seems like a hugely, unrelated jump, but maybe not so much.
When I was working in IT, my "fancy" title was database systems programmer/analyst. In a nutshell, I designed, built, and developed software for a variety of companies. I enjoyed the work because it was very creative and I was building something. Yes, you read it right! I really enjoyed designed a software product or feature, and doing it well. I would have to imagine that Steve Case felt the same way as he was building AOL.
Now I am in the real estate industry, and things are similar. I am very interested in development, and I expect that I may someday get involved in that. I appreciate smart and useful architecture and design, and I think I have an affinity for it. I dream about designing and building developments - creating something. Steve Case is doing what I dream about - creating a luxurious, thoughtful, useful, awe-inspiring development in a magical location.
And, I'm sure that Steve Case is doing something that he cares about deeply and loves.
So what's Bill Gates going to do?
