Foreclosure Scam Alet

By

If you have fallen behind on your mortgage payments you may be getting letters or calls from unscrupulous people who pretend to want to help you.  In March, the Division of Consumer Affairs issued an alert to consumers about scams targeting homeowners facing foreclosure.  If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, please contact an attorney to protect your interests.  For more information on these scams you can read the alerts online at www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/brief/surplus.pdf and www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/brief/foreclosure.pdf

Fortunately, I haven't had any clients to whom this has happened, but I recently read an article on this in New Jersey Realtor, May 2007.  This is a case of "buyer beware" so if you have friends or family who are in trouble with their mortgage payments, please pass this along.  I'm sure there are some very well intended people out there who really will help, but check them out before making any moves.

Thanks, my hope in posting this was to let as many of your customers know to beware.  As we know, there are always people out there that are ready to take advantage of peoples' bad situations.
