Be careful what you repeat!

CHECK IT OUT FIRST!

In these days of instant communication, it's even more important that we be careful what we repeat (or forward).  Once again, I received a forwarded email.  It sounded plausible (and a little exciting) so I thought perhaps it would make a fun blog.

(Be sure to read this entire blog.  Don't fall for this!)

Here's what I received by forward mail:

"During the month of August Mars will come closer to the earth than it has ever been
before.  By late August it will be bright orange and will seem as large as our
moon.
 Mark
your calendars for this great event!  Show your kids and grandkids. This is not likely to happen again for over 60,000 years!"

I think it would be irresponsible to report an event without doing some research and with all the search possibilities right here at our fingertips, how hard is that?  So off I went to check it out.  First stop; Google.

All I had to do was type in "August, 2010, Mars."  Here's the first thing I saw:

"Beware the Mars Hoax"

Reading more I discovered that while Mars will be closer, it will simply look like a red star, perhaps a little brighter than usual but most people won't even notice it.  So check out these events before you forward them to everybody in your address book.

Hi Marian,

Good for you, checking it out before spreading the rumour.

I learned years ago not to even pay attention to this stuff. They're like spreading rumours in an office and I've got better things to do with my time.

Hi Marian, thanks for clearing up the rumor. I try to be careful of what I forward. Thanks for sharing.

Marian - another good place to go is www.snopes.com, I learned to check out "facts" via e-mail as well as most of them are hogwash.

Marian,

I've learned to consult Snopes, Urban Myths, or Hoax.com before believing some of the stories I get in my inbox.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Has anyone ever received a legitimate email that asked them to forward it to everyone in the world?

Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!

Besides Snopes, I'll check out truthorfiction.com.  Always fun to check the stories, and it certainly saves embarassment.  I wish more people would verify before sending...

Hello Folks,

Just as I posted this blog yesterday I got very sick and wound up in the hospital.  (For more info, check out Amy Hahn's post, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.)  I'm fine today but a little behind.  Please forgive me for not replying personally to each of you.  I did manage to get off a message to the sender of the erroneous email.  She thanked me but I hope she gets more careful about sending them out.

Have a great week-end.
