Tips for a Successful Kitchen Remodel or MakeoverSince the explosion of remodeling TV shows and home makeover ideas that are spreading like wildfire in magazines, America's appetite for having the most glamorous rooms have become very important.  Kitchen remodels and makeovers are topping the list of what room consumers want most glamorous.

Now you can find great bargains on very nice items, but you also should look at functionality.  Function is just as important as style when it comes to the kitchen.  And, fortunately, there are many products available that offer both.

When you begin your remodeling project, you should first determine your budget.  The average kitchen remodel can cost between 10% - 20% of your home's value.  Also, determine your priorities when considering your budget.  Those who like to cook may want to consider professional style appliances.  Those with large families may want to incorporate more space.

After careful research, I've discovered that there are some important steps to follow to achieve a successful kitchen remodel.

Steps for a successful kitchen remodel:

* Do your homework - You can watch TV remodeling programs, go through remodeling and makeover magazines, attend remodeling shows, and even visit the parades of homes around the country.  If you want a professional designer to take over, choose a kitchen designer who is an NKBA member.  They will have the necessary training and experience to do the job right.

* Visit kitchen showrooms - When visiting a showroom, you can examine many options for countertops, cabinets, appliances, plumbing, lighting and flooring.  You will also get an idea for cost.

* Don't rush - Take your time when choosing everything from the cabinets to the floors.  Changing your mind after the remodeling project has begun can add around $1,500 to the initial cost.

* Get it in writing - If you choose to use a professional for your remodel, you should have a written contract that lists each phase of the project.  And never pay the full amount up front for labor.  Half of the labor cost is what most professionals will ask for.  Also, make sure they are licensed and insured before they begin work.

* Finalize the project - Once the project is decided upon, construction plans are ready, appliances are on order and your initial deposit is paid, it's time to survive the noise, workers and dust.  Just be sure everything is ready before you begin the tear-out.  And, if you have a designer, you should communicate with him or her regularly to avoid costly mistakes.

Liz,

If the home was built in 1977 or earlier, you must use a certified lead rennovator. :)
