A Tree Stump Can Be a Work of Art

My early morning bike ride today took me north on highway 36 to Niwot road. From there I went east to 95th St. and then south to Valmont before heading back into Boulder. I rode a total of 23 miles with an average speed of 15.3 mph.

When I passed through Niwot I noticed the wooden sculpture was unveiled. The sculpture is carved directly in the wood of a large tree trunk. There are actually two sculptures on two different tree trunks, but it was so early the light was only bright enough on one of them to photograph.

In the photo you’ll see the artist’s scaffolding is still in place so they must not be finished. I am not sure who is doing the sculpture but they are true works of art. I think it is amazing how a simple tree stump can be converted into an extraordinary one-of-a-kind sculpture.

Wow what a great carving that is! My neighbor just down the street has done this very same thing by carving an eagle into an old stump in his yard. However, his was not nearly as intricate & detailed as this one.

I love this wonderful carvings! Growing up in a small town called Sedro-Woolley we have a chainsaw carving event each summer at Logger Rodeo where artists compete to see who can carve the most amazing statues out of a simply log. Really spectacular & quite the site to see.

Could you post photos when it is completed?  That is amazing.  And, I mean, amazing.  We have some wonderful chainsaw artists here in Minnesota, too.  But this guy is more than just using a chainsaw. His eye for detail seems unbelievable.  Thanks for sharing this.

Danielle...Thanks for your comments and the links. Perhaps the impulse to carve goes back to our ancestors when art emerged more from nature.

Suzanne...Indeed I will. In fact, I'll post photos of both of the carvings. The detail is very impressive.

Lisa...Thank you for stopping by.

I never cease to be amazed by folks that can render a multi dimensional sculpture out a lump of stone or wood.

John, what a work of art.  I have a lot of respect for people that have wood skills.  I've seen a lot of different approaches to working with wood and this one was sure worth you stopping for the photos.
