WordPress on GoDaddy = Easy!

I just moved my blog from Wordpress.com to a self-hosted Wordpress installation on GoDaddy . . . and it has been SO easy!

This is a move I've been considering and reading about for several months, dreading all of that setup that I had read about.  Well, GoDaddy and Wordpress.org made it a very painless process.

So, here's the quick synopsis:

  • Called GoDaddy and they setup Wordpress hosting on my desired domain name.
  • About 24 hours later, the process (on their end) was complete and I was able to log-in to my "new" Wordpress.org Dashboard.  By the way, it is virtually identical to the Wordpress.com Dashboard so there was very little  "learning curve" there.
  • After exporting my blog from the .com site, I them imported it to my new WP installation and it brought in everything:  posts, comments, medial library, and pages.
  • Next, I located the same theme I had been using, Vigilance, and activated it so my blog had the same look as before.
  • Done!  Well, almost - after that is where the fun begins.  A self-hosted Wordpress.org installation gives you much more control over your blog with many additional capabilities.  You can read all about it at Wordpress.org.

Just a quick reminder - if you were not already using your own domain on WP.com, be sure and write a final post telling all your readers the new address for your blog so they can continue to read your updates.

You make it sound so easy.  I don't have an outside blog at this time but am considering it.

Have A Great Day!

Thanks Matthew, you're right - Wordpress is great!

Doris - it really easy and I highly recommend GoDaddy to buuy your domain and then host it.  Their tech. support people are awesome - fast, knowledgeable, helpful, and they don't make you feel like your questions are stupid.  (Like mine sometimes are!)  :-)

Pocono Mtn. - Check it out - you'll find it very easy to implement.

Hey Harrison, thanks for the comment.  I did check out your blog "Live at Newport Beach" and it is so well done!  What theme did you use for that?

I have a regular Wordpress blog, and did not know that there are advantages to switching to Wordpress.org. I'll be reading up on it and will consider switching over.

Sandy, be sure and think about the differences to see if they are important to you.  I think the biggest is just more control and flexibility - like adding some things to your sidebar using html.

Mike- I'm going to check this out.  I use GoDaddy where I first designed my website.  I use them to host it as well as my business email.  I started another outside blog using WP.com  Based on your answer to Sandy (#6) I'll have to see if it would be worth my making the switch.  BTW I agree with you, I've always had great customer service and tech support from GoDaddy.

Hi Kathy and thanks.  Yeah, sometimes self-hosted is good - sometimes not.

Hey Andrea, glad I could help and thanks for the comment.  How about sending me the link to your selfhosted blog - i'd like to check it out.

Mike
