Take a walk through one (or all) of Hawaii's beautiful botanical gardens.
On the west slope of the Kohala Mountains near Kawaihae you'll find Pua Mau Place. Enjoy hundreds of species of flowering plants and trees. Walk through their maze of 250 hibiscus and an aviary of more than 150 exotic birds! This is a non-profit garden open daily from 9am - 4 pm located in Kawaihae off Hwy 270 on Ala Kahua Drive, turn right at mile marker 6, drive up the hill to the gate in a lava rock wall.
Approximately 8.5 miles north of Hilo you'll find Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. Located on a 40 acre valley, stroll through a tamed jungle to Onomea Arch. Along the way you'll enjoy a variety of exotic plants (over 2,000 species), from orchids to palms, beautiful streams, waterfalls and a lily pond. This garden is open daily from 9 am - 5 pm - watch for the sign that reads "Scenic Route 4 miles long" on Hwy 19, turn right and drive about two miles to the gardens entrance.
Eyes open for a bigger garden? Come check out the World Botanical Gardens. Currently still being developed on 300 acres on the slope of Mauna Kea and Umauma Falls. You'll find a 300 ft triple tier waterfall - bring your camera! Recently Kamae Falls has also been cleared for viewing. World Botanical Gardens houses endangered plants.
