When our family moved to Benicia, CA in 1995 our daughters were 6 years old. Prime age to scout out the local Benicia parks and hiking trails that surround our new home.
The one I am featuring today is called "Gateway Park" and tucked in between single family homes at the top of Barton Way. Rose Drive is the main road through the Southampton neighborhoods. From Rose Drive, make your way around several turns along side the residential neighborhood til you almost get to the top. Once you make the last curve, on your right a small park appears. It is intimate because there is a small playground and a spacious grassy area for games. Lush leaf laden tress provide shade to the park with benches close by to watch the children play. Well kept playground equipment provides hours of enjoyment for young ages. There is a water fountain to quench dry throats from laughing and having fun.
Gateway Park is so hidden you almost plan on having it to yourself most any time of the day. What makes it even more special are the views toward the hills and a trail for hiking accessible from the park. For a bit of exercise take a hike to see the "backside" of Benica (one of many, I might add!). The trail is marked the Rollye Wiskerson Trail, named after a longtime advocate of hiking trails round the Bay Area.
Just so you know, this is one of many parks hidden among the neighborhoods in Benicia. Take a picnic, your hiking shoes, some water and your family for a fun filled healthy afternoon at Gateway Park in Benicia
