Great points about blogging!  You DO have something worth saying and you SHOULD maintain a blog.  I'm always amazed to see who is following my posts.

Talking to Your Customers

Almost daily I see posts on Active Rain from new bloggers agonizing on how to get started with blogging. They want to know how others are generating business from their blogs and whether the time and effort is going to be worth it.

My answer is YES. Blogging is worth the time and effort. However with anything that pays great benefits, how you move forward can make the difference between a phone call, text or dead air.

The first question you need to ask yourself is who are you trying to engage with your blog? Are you a Gen X agent and want to attract prospects like you? Your posts, your writing style and even the words you use are going to be different than someone trying to attract Baby Boomers or REO managers. You should work with what you know and are comfortable with. When you try and step outside those boundaries others can tell and it shows. It is like wearing a pair of shoes that just don't fit. They may look good but by the end of the day all you have are tired feet and blisters.

Don't worry about not being a “writer” and agonize over every word and where the commas should go. Relax and realize it is about being yourself and the message, not the grammar. Write the same way as you speak. Spelling is important though so at least spell check before you post.

If you still don't know what to blog about call some friends (remember they are potential clients) and ask them what they want to know about the real estate market or your area. Posts don't have to be long. In fact a post over 250-350 word will probably lose your audience. Make sure you format your posts so they have paragraphs, white space and graphics.

Once you start with a few simple posts you will realize almost everything you do in your real estate day could becomes blog fodder. Enjoy the benefits blogging on Active Rain will bring to your business and as Arthur Carlson wrote “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff”.

Kathleen, People want information … and they want it freely. The two most recent people who found me on the Internet … ActiveRain post … said they liked that they could search the MLS without being forced to provide their information. This tells me … in my market … my strategy of making the MLS search easy … works!
