I just found out that on July 21 it will be National Junk Food Day. I was actually quite surprised since I thought that day is unceremoniously celebrated daily. Who invents days like that?
If I was still a kid, then I would most definitely celebrate National Junk Food Day since my parents did not let me eat a lot of junk or drink much soda. I grew up in an Air Force family so we were regimented in eating everything on our plate, saying Grace, etc... I know it sounds old fashioned now to hear about that. I can't help but thinking that somehow those rules actually served me as a kid and now as an adult I have this voice in my head that pops up whenver I do eat junk food. It just reminds me that junk food is not the best choice especially in cases where you want to do it excessively. I am also reminded how guilt does not serve me the best either so in most cases it is easy to just say no.
I can tell you that in foreclosed homes I can tell quite quickly how some families have lived on junk foods since the home is crawling with it everywhere. It is especially sad when it is evident that they had children in the home also.
In the end, National Junk Food Day has helped me realize that I do eat fairly healthy and you do not need one day to remind you of all the crazy stuff out there to gorge on. It actually reminds me that I need to make a run to Whole Foods!
