www.historichomesofdenver.comThe Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion is commonly known around Denver as possibly the MOST haunted building in the city.  For this reason, we could refer to the Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion as the Haunted Peabody-Whitehead Mansion!

The Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion was designed by famed Denver architect Frank Edbrooke and was built in 1889.  The Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion is located at 1128 Grant Street along Denver's famed Millionaire Row.

The name Peabody-Whitehead Mansion comes from Colorado's two term Governor James Peabody and Doctor William Riddick Whitehead.  Colorado's heavy handed Governor Peabody declared martial law in Denver during mining strikes, and used the Colorado National Guard to thwart not only the striking miners, but the local newspapers as well.

William Riddick Whitehead was a doctor from both the Crimean and U.S. Civil Wars. Many of the soldiers that Dr. Whitehead treated died, including Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.  It is supposed that many of the spirits of those dead soldiers followed Dr. Whitehead from New York to Denver and took up residence at the Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion.

In the 1950's, the Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion or, the Haunted Peabody-Whitehead Mansion was converted into apartments.  The Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion aka the Haunted Peabody-Whitehead Mansion was then converted into a string of restaurants and nightclubs.  Restaurant employees often told of knives, forks, pots and pans flying around the kitchen and dining room areas. Books fell off of shelves, drinks were poured down peoples backs all without the help of anyone living in the vicinity.  At one point an electrician was called in to repair a "short" in a chandelier that was flickering on and off.  When the electrician got to the Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion aka the Haunted Peabody-Whitehead Mansion, he informed the restaurant manager that the chandelier was not wired or hooked up to electricity!

Over the years, psychics, parapsychologists and camera crews have been brought into the Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion to try and figure out who or what was causing the "occurrences".  One team reported that a young woman named Eloise, or Ella, was in residence.  It is said that her image has been seen in mirrors and also in the men's restroom.  The basement of the Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion aka the Haunted Peabody-Whitehead Mansion is where a waitress reportedly hung herself, and her spirit remained.

The Historic Peabody-Whitehead Mansion is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is occupied by Malbur Properties, LLC.
