American River Deer by Myrl Jeffcoat
(Slide Show contains 11 images)

It was a busy workday today, so I knew I would need to stay close to my home office.  However, before the day left its own pace, I decided to walk the few blocks over to the American River, with its bike and nature trails.

I often forget how fortunate I am living in the Greater Sacramento area, with its wealth of entertainment, natural beauty and leisure activities.  Two rivers - the Sacramento and the American, cradle Sacramento.

The American River tends to be the quieter of the two, because motorized boats aren't generally allowed on the stretch between Nimbus Dam (near Folsom), and several miles away in the vicinity of Discovery Park near Old Sacramento.  However, there is often raucous laughter and antics from crowds of rafters - especially on summer days, providing evidence of life in the watery urban oasis.

While walking through the nature area, which makes up part of the collective American River Parkway, the otherwise quiet morning stirred from the accompanying herd of deer.  I stopped long enough to snap a few photos, and become acquainted with my newly found friends.  They seemed tame enough, except for a pair of fawns, which were more skittish and difficult to capture to pixels.

Other residents of the area included a family of Wild Turkeys.   The turkeys too, seemed comfortable enough in their surroundings, and weren't noticeably bothered by my presence and curious glances.

For more information about the American River Parkway, and the valuable resource it is for recreation and nature in the Greater Sacramento Area, you can visit the American River Parkway website.

Positively Delightful, How wonderful and they are all smiling at you. They just know you will make them famous. For sure these images will last many lifetimes . I surely wish I had been with you and can figure I might have been limited to the turkeys but then they would would have probably run off as soon as they heard me talking to you about Thanksgiving, LMAO.

Myrl, they seem smaller than the ones we have out here, probably still full of tics!! Wow the American River is really flowing!

Tony and Darcy - They are relatively tame critters.

William - The secret of taking animal photos is to explain to them you don't like things that go bang, and you like your meat already Safeway wrapped. . .They feel safer around you that way:-)

David - I think this breed of deer is naturally smaller than some located in other parts of the country.

Diane - Actually the walk was early in the day - around 7:45 am or so.  And, it was really peaceful there.

Ann - I have a herd of new friends. . .LOL

Those are some great shots!  I'm surprised the deer let you get close enough and stood stood still enough for you to snap all of them.

Myrl I felt as if I was taking this walk with you along the American River.  Nature does have so much to offer and you do a great job capturing this.

Carissa - I was almost able to reach out and pet some of them.

John - It really is.  I live in a regular subdivision, but these views are within a 1/2 mile of mile home.

Jennifer - It's so true.  We can be in the thick of it with our daily lives, but simply stepping back into nature, can change all that.

Myrl, I'm a little surprised at how close you were able to get to the deer and the wild turkeys.  In Illinois and Wisconsin they are a bit more fearful of humans and for good reason!

Nick - I have a neighbor that jogs down in that area.  He tells me the herd of deer sometimes run with him.  That's how tame they are.

Well, I tried what you said. That darn rabbit from Spring sent her young ones over to my yard and I told them that I liked things that go BANG and if they didn't get out of the yard I would see to it that they were eaten. They laughed so hard that they ended up falling over on their backs and just giggled. When I went for my camera to capture the giggling, they decided I had a bad attitude and hide from me.  I noticed a few minutes later they were eating again.  So much for the revised BANG theory.

Ah the frustrations of life, William:-)  I'm getting the mental image of your giggling rabbits.

My frustration is that I became enamored with your "MyBlogLog" widget that shows your visitors.  I decided to "try" to add one.  But, it doesn't show me my visitors:-)  Or maybe, I just haven't had any. . .LOL

I should be working as I'm a bit swamped right now -- I'm finally taking on an associate to help -- yet here i am looking at your pictures of deer and turkeys. LOL. Couple of those shots the deer seem to be saying, "humpf??" You're such a distraction, Myrl!!!

Barbara Jo - Those are "hyper-local" deer, here in the Greater Sacramento area. . .LOL

Elizabeth - I have been worried about you for quite some time.  You are without a doubt one of the busiest agents I know.  And although you make bloodsport out doing business, you do not take enough personal time for you and your husband. . .I'm certainly gald you have taken on an associate.  And as they say, "If you are going to soar with eagles, you can't work with turkeys."  However, there's nothing wrong at watching or looking at a few. . .LOL

Myrl,

I always like observing the "other kind of residents" in all parts of the world.   I liked the deer with the two simple antlers.  :)

Jack and Izzy, I'm glad you like 'em.  I think our deer are smaller in size than other places around the country.

Gerry - Among the herd, I discovered a pair of forked horned deer.  You can't see the forks really, because they run from front to back, not side to side.  There was also quite a number of does, and some fawns.  I didn't see the full adult males anywhere. . .I think they were out on a male bonding encounter:-)

Debra - Thanks Debra. . .I often forget this area is so close to home.
