Ear Worms...

Ear Worms...

E-e-e-ww! Gross! You may know them by another name but everyone gets ear worms. You know, those annoying songs that get bored in your head and cycle on and on and on... Ear worms can drive you batty if you let them. Advertisements are notorious at creating ear worms. A snappy, incomplete, tune, ingeniously created to make their product stay on or in your mind. Why am I writing this? Because I have one. "Ole Blue Eyes" himself droning on and on in the chasms of my mind. Ug!!!

Okay, now to get rid of these blasted ear worms. The mind likes completeness. You are listening to a song, get out of your car and its trapped with no way to get out. Sometimes ear worms don't show up until a day later. But they will show up. The remedy? Just play that song or another song all the way through to completion. Simple now isn't it? Now to find my Led Zeppelin album so I can blow "Ole Blue Eyes" out of the water...

Michael- never heard them called ear worms but my husband gets them all of the time and he walks around singing the first few lines out loud.  Then next thing you know, I'm humming the first few lines too.  I usually just give him a soft slap on the back of the head and tell him to turn the record over.

Michael, I'm with Pat, that is the first thing I thought off was Star Trek.. considering the photo you were using a few weeks ago.

Hey, ole Blue Eyes ear worms are better than Barney ear worms.... which by the way I have changed the words to, but can't write them here.

Michael - I recommend Inna Gadda da Vida, especially the drum solo. If that doesn't work, a bit of Blue Rondo ala Turk or some other progressive jazz. Guarenteed to drive out the worms.

Michael, I've never heard this term but have certainly suffered from the symptoms.  Right now, I have Madonna's "Vogue" running through my head.  Led Zeppelin?  Great idea!

Micheal...

I have never thought of that remedy. But the logic makes perfect sense.

The though of worms in my ear is a not one I like to think about. However, If you are stuck with one, make sure it's one you like.

Ok, so you got me with that title, but yuk!  Once in a while those will keep me up at night.  I read how to get rid of them.  Eat cinnamon.  Huh?  Can't figure out why that would work.

Michael that some times happens to me but it is almost never a "good" song and I don't know if I could handle hearing the whole thing through to the end :)

Michael, I wrote a post last week about the 50th anniversary of The Twist by Chubby Checker, and I am stuck with that "ear worm".  But it is a good one.

Here is some Led Zeppelin (open link).

Yeah, and the ear worms are usually really dumb, trite songs. My remedy: sign them to my husband and transfer them!! (it's not one-sided--he does the same to me.)

The worst ear worms are Barry Manilow tunes when you're trapped on an elevator.
