Des Moines digs, saws its way out from under storm debris

In June forecasters assured us that the inclement weather and near daily rains would end when the month ran out. Well, here we are in July and the rain and thunderstorm activity shows no signs of abating. Sunday brought torrential rains to the area and 60-70 mile per hour winds. It has continued raining on and off since then, felling many trees and causing millions of dollars in property damage.

The force of the winds can be seen here in a damaged awning at the Tandoor Indian restaurant on 8th St. in West Des Moines. The wind ripped the support posts from their moorings in a brick wall.

Some people in Urbandale were less fortunate having lost their home when a tree fell on the home, snaping a powerline on the way down causing an attic fire to break out.

Workers can be seen here removing a fallen tree on Polk Blvd in front of the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center.

A large oak came down across a fence at Waveland Golf course just east of Kingman Blvd in this scene.

Folks who attended Roosevelt High School in the 1930's to the 60's, including luminary Cloris Leechman, may remember the pond in the front lawn of the school. The pond was drained some years back but with the recent rains it has reappeared! A workman in the background is coming down to try to rectify the situation but as of this morning the pond was still there.

Trees down and blocking roads have been a common site the past few days, such as this one blocking the 4000 block of Lincoln Place Dr. City crews have been doing a great job of removing them, but they are having a hard time keeping up. Just this morning I was blocked on my way home from the Des Moines Science Center by a fallen tree in the 2800 block of Terrace Dr.
