This is really cool - I am so excited that our lovely little town is going to have its own college! Lackawanna College is opening its Hawley Campus in what most people remember as the Castle Building - but before it was Castle Antiques it had the illustrious name of Sherman Underwear Factory....even earlier, it was the Hawley Silk Mill.
Since "Historic Hawley Silk Mill" has a much better ring to it than Sherman's Underwear Factory, that is what the complex is now known as.
Lackawanna College is only using a portion of the Silk Mill. There is still retail space available.
Like everyone else in the area, I was disappointed when Castle closed its doors and wondered what would ever become of the gigantic bluestone building that has been a major landmark in Hawley, for forever! I was THRILLED when the pioneers who took on this project made so much progress, and now Hawley can be a "College Town."
Right near the Hawley Silk Mill is the new, chic coffee house - known as Cocoon. No, not a reference to Ron Howard's movie, though sometimes I feel like I'm living out a sci fi movie; the name is naturally in referecence to the silk mill history!
Lackawanna College's Lake Region Center's Open House is August 12 at 5:30 pm. I can't wait - I'm certainly going to go and check it out and see what all they've done! It's very exciting and I'm proud of my little town - Go, Hawley, Go! :)
