According to the experts at NOAH, heat is the #1 killer weather-related killer in the U.S. (and, you thought it was those frog-choker rains we get here in Florida). In the 1980 heatwave, over 1250 people died. In 1995, more than 700 deaths occured in the Chicago area heat-wave, and the European heatwave of 2003 claimed an estimated 50,000 lives. We all know that children, and pets should not stay in parked vehicles without a/c for any length of time, and yet, we still read about children and dogs dying in cars. Even if the a/c is on when you leave them, it may not be by the time you get back.
Safety Tips for Children:
Never leave your child unattended in a vehicle; even with the windows down.
Always make sure all children have left the car when you reach your destination.
Always check the temperature of seat belt buckles before restraining the child.
Adult Safety Tips:
Slow down; dress for summer, and drink lots of fluids (preferable water). And, don't get too much sun.
Pets: Never leave a pet in a car; even if you think you will only be a few minutes; even if the a/c is on (what if it shuts off?).
