Harrisburg NC Update-Big Box Doesn't Always Win!

By

Hot off the presses in Harrisburg NC, where we've been struggling with the issues that surround smart growth!

Our town turned down a zoning request from Lowe's Home Improvement in the fall, and the town was promptly sued by Lowe's.  Lovely, right?

Last night, the town received word from the judge that the town's decision to deny rezoning was upheld.  If we don't want Lowe's there, we don't have to have Lowe's there.

Of course as most of you know, my biggest goal for the town is to keep out Wal-Mart and its ilk.  This kind of decision should give heart to the folks who support smart growth.  Which means sometimes saying yes, and sometimes saying no.

My only disappointment in not having Lowe's on that site, is that they were going to provide a 10 acre site for our new Harrisburg YMCA.  So the YMCA, which I support strongly, should get started looking for land of their own, and starting a building campaign separately.  No need to wait for the next company to offer a site as a bribe to the town.

Those are tough issues, Leigh. Our town is embroiled in controversial discussion about Wal-Mar right now. My opinion? We don't need it. There is one right next door in the adjacent town.

Leigh - We have had the Wal-Mart debate going on here.  I am glad you posted this as it reminded me that I need to post an update on it.

WE fought Walmart for years. But, it won, we did get concessions, big burm, lots of trees. It is all ready for the walls to come it. It is only .8 miles from my house. I really didn't oppose it too much as it is outside Saline and I love Ms Mary's Southern bisquits so now my kids don't keep having to bring them from TN.

Hi Leigh,

Keep fighting, 'cause the Wal-Marts and the Lowes do not go away!  Here in Wilmington, the neighbors fought Wal-Mart and won....for now....the land is still there prime for rezoning.

Leigh, We have a Wal- Mart in the  Commercial Area. We fought a second one coming  to a more a residental area tjust a few miles down the road.

It's amazing how insensitive The WM is to local  issues. Back in NY they tried to come into a charming little village,  They had their eye on a tract that was farm land, on a 2 lane road!  What a fight that was! We won!

Hey fellow candidate for town council... you know what I say... All roads lead to the big retail smiley facel  I buy my milk there and do see that they've discarded the little vests for blue polo's.  Nice...

All too familiar a scene - we fought Wal-Mart and lost, now we are a sea of "big-box" Wal-Mart to open this fall, Lowe's Target, the list goes on. I'm not hugely opposed to the development - although I was not in favor of Wal-Mart. We were lucky to receive the "upscale Wal-Mart", I had no idea those 2 words went hand in hand!! I do love the convenience factor though!
