Leaving on vacation, either for a weekend or for an extended period of time can be very hectic and it is easy to forget the small, but important things which may make the difference in an average or a terrific getaway. The following checklist is provided to help you remember some of those small, but significant items.

 Vacation

Just before Leaving:

  • Unplug temporary use appliances such as irons, curling irons, steam curlers, hair dryers, multi-cord outlets, coffee pots, etc.
  • Throw out food that will go bad before you return.
  • Set house lights and possibly a radio or television to be activated by a timer.
  • Leave a vehicle parked outside
  • Empty trash inside and outside home.
  • Close windows and drapes, check locks.
  • Do NOT change answering machine to say you are away.

Good tips! I usually spend as much time getting my house ready for our trips as I spend getting ourselves ready to go!

Really important if you want a welcoming return from your trip.

Best regards,

I do the same Judy! Nothing makes me happier than coming back to a clean, organized home after being gone for several days, just one less thing to do when coming back, although the unpacking is such a big hassle!

So glad you put on your list not to change your voicemail message to say you are away. You also shouldn't tweet that you're going on a trip or write about it in your blog unless you have someone house sitting.  The last thing you want is to end your trip by coming home to a house that has been broken into.  Great list, Chris and Maria.

Emcee, I wholeheartedly agree with you. It amazes me how detailed people get when tweeting or facebooking that they're on vacation, giving exact dates of departure/arrival, where they're staying, etc. (so risky these days)...thanks for the input!
