I have a big advantage over many bloggers. My advantage: I know that I am stupid.

I have a big advantage over many bloggers, not all but many, including Active Rain bloggers among others. My advantage: I know that I am stupid.

Now let's have some fun at my expense. I am suspending my privilege to remove responses from this blog that are unfavorable to me with the only exception being foul language. You may respond to this blog with any kind of comment including personal attack and any type of correction or objection or mitigation that comes to your mind with the only exception being the use of foul language. Personally I would be able to manage the foul language but I want to protect two personalities; those that may be offended and the guilty.

My stupidly: I am dyslectic so I often mix up words, letters and numbers. In addition I have trouble with confusing vowel sounds. Therefore I am prone to misspelling and I read slowly.  In addition there are large amounts of subject material that I only understand enough to be dangerous. I am plagued with a lineal thinking brain and upon hearing or reading a statement I will automatically question if the inverse is true or does that statement support or refute earlier statements. I am a slave to the belief that words have meanings, there are rules of grammar and punctuation (even with some liberties) in order to effectively communicate the meaning intended.

My issues are, as stupid as I am, while I am aware of the many bloggers who do not appear to have a clue of what they are talking about or the vocabulary to select the meaningful words to communicate their apparent meanings or to spell and punctuate correctly should anyone give them serious thought.  What got me on this tirade this morning was I read a member's blog (member to go unnamed) that was downright foolish. I read many other posts of this member to see if the foolishness and poor writing was peculiar to the first blog I read or was it frequent. Unfortunately it was frequent. The thought occurred to me if this is evidence of this blogger's abilities with written communications is this blogger a danger to clients? Does this agent have any concept of what real estate documents say or mean?

Please consider the following questions:.

Should respondents to blogs and other posts to blogs be allowed to point out errors of English grammar etc., logic and evidence omitted without being accused of personal attack? My thought is if no corrections are offered the writer may never learn. After all they wrote what they wrote without catching the errors or they did not care about the errors. Of course there is the possibility that the writer making the correction is incorrect and therefore needs to be corrected.

Should respondents to blogs and other posts to blogs remain silent? Public criticism may be of assistance to some to learn but it also may severely dampen expression.

Is the greater goal of blogging the free unfettered expression? The cost of bad information or poor writing must be endured without hurting the feelings of the writer.

How much harm would be done if blogging were curtailed due to fear of being criticized?  Maybe none or limited only to the loss of the writer to vent.

So back to my advantage that I know I am stupid. Because I know that I am stupid I will take my stupidity into account before I blog or post and therefore refrain if I have not checked out my thoughts. My perceived advantage is I will be foolish less often and may even learn something when I check out my thoughts before posting. Is this post an exception?

John at #11: A crook, a liar, unethical, a pervert, unprofessional; have you been reading my mail? There have been a few (just a few) that have reacted such as you describe.  Reading their words I can understand their reaction. Their hands were caught in the cookie jar; perhaps I made my point too well. By the way my hands have been caught in the cookie jar but I find it easier to say, "You got me want a cookie?"

Joetta at #15: Thanks for the benefit of the doubt. The ridicules length of the sentence that Jane (#1) pointed out was not an intentional funny.  Now if I were really smart (not stupid) I would go with the flow and claim, "That's right you got the joke." But then some of my best humor is by accident.

Jean at #19: No opining for a funny here so I'll be clinical. I agree that if it be a choice to measure the content or the construction I also would chose the content first to be measured although that may be difficult with very poor construction.  Today's vernacular would use the term passionate as you have used sincerity and integrity (help me here - give me a little license).  The perpetrators of the Spanish Inquisition were as are today the jihadist very passionate, sincere and within their frame of reference may have integrity but they are also wrong. Therefore to me intrinsic correctness is in first position.  Would you make a public or private correction if you found a factual representation intrinsically false?

Blake at #21:  Good you found some of the humor that I may have hidden too well. Your friend reminds me of a simple cartoon that I cut out, copied and had it pasted about my things so to see it often. It stated, "The more I know the more I know that I don't know."  That is why before I would publish a blog much less correct another I would do my best to fact check and try to use the words and construction to accurately send my message.  That is exactly what I meant by my advantage of being stupid.

Bill. Blogging is mostly about having good communication skills. These skills may or may not require proper grammar and punctuation (it depends on who you are writing for). I have seen folks that are terrific writers but are terrible communicators and vice versa.

Some people get caught up using big words when really there is a perfectly good small word that would work just fine. I guess they just want us to see how smart they are.

So....my oipinion is, everybody just needs to do their best. Don't get hung up on grammar and spelling. Just write like you speak and write to get your point across. Everything else will take care of itself.

You don't need no good grammer to be good at real estate. :)

I agree with Bryant, the only thing we need to do is to get our point across and be a good real estate agent. I am not a good writer either furthermore, English is my second language, but that does not stop me from sharing with you my opinion about real estate. After I write a blog, I always take time to run the spelling and grammar and proofread. Microsoft word if my editor but I still have to pay attention because the program is not perfect.

William, didn't run through all the comments but loved what you said. It's my understanding that it's kinder to email the subject that can't write directly and point out the error. Most won't learn if, in fact, they make the same mistakes frequently.

Most people think that the rest of the world speaks with an accent...  That normal way of speaking is the local way.    I kinda' view many writing styles in a similar way - it's that's person writing accent instead of verbal accent.

Jane Peters sent me an email the other day.. I had misspelled a word in a title to a post.  I've sent others emails that I was pretty sure the error was unintentional.. not the normal way they would spell something etc.
