1998 Web design

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Lanthorn Real Estate LTD., Trenton, Ontario

Lately Active Rain has undergone a bit of a design change. Personally, I like it. The States/Provinces page where the agents are ranked looks fresh and new, like it belongs in 2010. Frankly, the old design looked a bit  2008ish. It's strange how that works. I didn't think anything was wrong with the old layout until I saw the new one. Suddenly I realized (after the fact) that it was time for a change. Thanks AR.

Do you remember what the internet looked like in 1998? At the time it was fresh, new, exciting and I was filled with wonder. Amazing....., look at that script scrolling across my computer screen. How do these geniuses make it do that? A dancing, flashing dog at the bottom of my screen? Holy Moly, we are at the zenith of human achievement.

It's kind of funny now, because the things that were so new and wonderful at the time are laughably outdated just a few short years later.

Geocities-izer

Do you feel like a bit of a giggle?  You can go to this website called The Geocitie-izer, and type in the URL of your website (or any other website for that matter), and it will take you to an image of what your current day website would have looked like in 1998 (as a Geo-cities site). As the flashy scrolling bar on the introduction page notes, it makes it look as if your site was designed by a 13 year old in 1996.

We've come a long way baby.

I was a little shocked at first when I saw the changes. But after about an hour of lurking, it really grew on me. Thanks AR. Thanks Malcolm for the post. Woody

Malcolm- I just went there, typed in my site, and well let me just say my avatar looked much better than I could ever imagine.  My site had lots of bubbles and sparkly diamonds.  Fun! Thanks for this.

Hey Malcolm,

Regarding your post...What a great example... and I agree, I like the changes to AR. Which brings me to my own website, and the need to bring it out of 2008, into AR standards.

I had an opportunity to read your profile... Such a great personal story, and so very different than most I've read. Very well done.

I was using Netscape 1.0 way back then. I remember my brother and I playing around with HTML. We thought it was cool to use the <marquee> tag... Later on that tag got deprecated and W3C doesn't recommend using it in any HTML documents. Oh the good ol days!

<marquee> this is a test </marquee>

Has it been 20 years already?  Seems like those blinking sites were just created a couple of years ago!  Fun stuff.
