The Lessons for Life water safety campaign kicked off during a news conference today in Mesa. The campaign, created by Hubbard Family Swim School, Carl's Jr., Southwest Ambulance and Phoenix Children's Hospital, will allow parents to get their children free swim lessons during August, which is Drowning Impact Awareness Month.
"Lessons for Life is a very pro-active approach aimed to prevent drownings in Arizona," Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said. "This is a great example of community partners coming together to help stop these tragedies."
Lessons for Life will offer free swim lessons to 100 children ages one to eight during every Saturday in August from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Hubbard Family Swim School at Mesa Riverview, 1061 N. Dobson Road. The program will also feature CPR demonstrations from Southwest Ambulance and water safety and drowning impact awareness from Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Parents can register their children Saturday, July 24 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Hubbard Family Swim School. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.
"I have been a registered lifeguard with the City of Mesa for five years, which inspired my platform of drowning prevention and awareness," Miss Arizona 2010 Kathryn Bulkley said. "Drowning is a tragedy that knows no bounds and is completely preventable. That is why Lessons for Life is so important." Bulkley saved a child while working as a lifeguard in 2007. Swim lessons and CPR form one of the three key layers of protection against drowning. The other protection layers are adult supervision and working barriers around pools and bathtubs.
