The local newspaper here wrote an editorial recently stating that LeBron James free agent move from the Cleavland Cavaliers to The Miami Heat is "just another example of the lack of employee loyalty" in today's marketplace. He referenced that in times past, people were loyal to their employers and that Lebron James was somehow a bad person for taking the "free agent" offer for a better job and more pay.
This struck me mainly because I also have made a free agent move recently from my previous broker to join Re/Max Realtec here in Palm Harbor, Florida. I suppose I am also guilty of not being loyal to my employer.
The interesting thing to me is where is the employer loyalty? How many thousands of people have been laid off in the past five years, how many employers have cut salaries, reduced benefits and eliminated health insurance in the name of bigger profits. Don't get me wrong, as a business owner, I am in favor of being profitable and if cutting back is called for then do it sooner than later.
However, shouldn't loyalty to our family and their well-being come before loyalty to a company. What do you think the writer of this editorial would do if he were presented with a better offer? I wonder who would write the editorial about his departure and what would they have to say? After all, chances are they would be in a similar position having just joined the paper to replace the departing employee. Interesting.
As for Labron, good for him and I hope he uses his God given talent and the new found wealth to give back to the people of Miami.
