Stonehenge is one of the World Heritage Sites that have been elevated to a 'Mysterious-Mystic' position.
It has been featured in film during the hours of day & night.
It has been filmed during the "Solstice Sun Rising".
It has been claimed by various religions-groups as a protected-site.
It has been equated with mysterious interactions with humanity.
And , NOW, it has been 'twinned' to a near-by [1/2 mile distant] with a Wood-henge.
What makes this fascinating is that the area being 'mapped' has been considered an empty field around the stone-henge.
The University of Birmingham & Ludwig Boltzman Institute in Austria have embarked upon a three-year project to investigate, explore, & categorize the surrounding area in the Salisbury Plain to see IF evidence of dwellings or structures existed.
Two weeks into the project, using ground-penetrating radar, they discovered an underground [wooden posts disintegrated] site that:
...is ceremonial in design
...is made up of 22 post holes
...is built on the same orientation as the Stone [henge] site
...is seen to have both NE and SW entrances.
...is a major site found in the last 50 + years.
...is seen to have had a burial barrow in the center--excavated in early 1900's
A professor from the University--Vince Gaffney--is attributed to have stated that:
...' haven't found a major ceremonial site of this type, or..significance, for probably 50-years or more within the
area of Stone henge.
...' the presumption that..just an empty field, ...now we get a major ceremonial monument looking at Stonehenge. '

This is a massive finding within and outside of the Archaeological Field.
If you go on the site above, be certain to locate & click on the link therein that will take you to another such site.
this wooden site-nicknamed- Woodhenge--is actually the Moorehead Circle NE of Cincinnati.
The site is fascinating in the similarity of design & possible utilization.
Check it out for yourself, or those of you from Ohio here in the Rain--fill us in from the 'side-lines' so-to-speak.
And, who said that it is a waste of time to 'dig in the sand'

Kathy...Ohio is new to me, too. I guess that i missed the documentary of which you speak--would love to have seen it as anything Stonehenge--henge--woodhenge is interesting to me. Am not a Druid, nor do I worship the wicca-Mother-figure [?] way, but do believe in powers from nature and interactions between mankind & nature
entities of nature. [probably an indication as to why I also like many venues on the SyFy channel] LOL
Thanks for the stop & comment; Hope that your weather is good for your Highland games.
