Colorado Springs & the Pikes Peak Region… All You Need to Know (and more!)

Why do we love it here? Why have we decided to raise our family and grow our business in the 2nd (ok, maybe 3rd?) largest city in Colorado? Ahh! Where can we begin!? How about the beginning…

Colorado Springs started out in 1871, as a resort town for the wealthy European and East Coast friends and family of our city’s founder, General William Jackson Palmer. Gold was soon found in the nearby hills of Cripple Creek, but the tourist industry has always been the real staple of our community.  The scenic beauty of Colorado Springs- nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and Pikes Peak- has always been our main stronghold for tourism.

However, in 1942, with the start of World War II, 137,000 acres south of Colorado Springs was donated to the U.S. Military; which soon became the Mountain Post of Fort Carson. Ever since then, military has remained a large and valuable part of the life and economy of our city. Besides Fort Carson, other military bases and installations include:

  • NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command)
  • Air Force Academy – where the Fighting Falcon Air Force Football and cadet air shows are second to none!

There are other great industries that offer a lot to the Colorado Springs economy and community. Some of these include:

  • The Olympic Training Center ~ Located in the heart of Colorado Springs, the “OTC” offers amazing facilities and “high altitude training” for athletes world-wide.
  • Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame ~ Just west of I-25 you will find a great museum that offers everything you would want to know about rodeos, cowboys and all the lives and events that made the professional rodeo what it is today.
  • Focus on the Family ~ In northern Colorado Springs, Dr. James Dobson created this enormous facility and outreach center to help promote his family-oriented dreams and ambitions. In fact, recently, Colorado Springs was found to have more churches, synagogues, and other religious places of worship per capita than any other place in the U.S.
  • Broadmoor Hotel ~ “Located in Colorado Springs at the foot of the Rockies on 3,000 acres, The BROADMOOR provides an environment of unparalleled beauty and luxury surrounded by the mountains and centered by Cheyenne Lake. One of the few resorts in the country to have earned the Mobil Five-Star and the AAA Five-Diamond ratings every year since the awards were established, The BROADMOOR is proud to provide guests with the finest in accommodations and services.”

Colorado Springs offers a comfortable and mild climate, as the Rocky Mountains offer protection against extreme weather. Even when it SNOWS, the warm sun is close behind, offering warm days to enjoy sledding and snowman building. Not to mention that Colorado Springs is just a day trip (about 2 1/2 hours each way) to the renowned ski resorts of Breckenridge and Keystone – where the conditions are ideal and the powder is real.

What other wonderful attractions do we love about our city?
Well, there are SO MANY, but here are a few of our favorites:

  • Of course, we are in Pikes Peak country- and you can’t be anywhere in this beautiful city without stunning views of our mountain – Pikes Peak. You can take the Cog Railroad to the top, or you could brave the hike to the summit on foot! Annual car and foot races are also such a blast!
  • Take a hike or rock climb in our beautiful Garden of the Gods. This free city park is made of red rocks and erosion sculpted formations- many of which are over 300 million years old! There are dozens of family (and dog) friendly hiking trails, a nature center, gift shops, museum and opportunities for breath-taking rock climbing, too!
  • Take a day with friends or family, just west of Colorado Springs,(in art town -Manitou Springs) to experience Cave of the Winds – where “Just beyond darkness lies the thrill… of discovery” and there are spelunking tours for all ages and skill levels!
  • Pack a picnic and take the family to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo- home of the world’s best giraffe breeding program! “The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is home to more than 750 animals representing some 142 species from around the world, over 32 of which are classified as endangered or threatened.

What about housing? From beautiful downtown Victorians to west side 50’s ramblers to suburban tri-levels to east side new build homes to northern custom homes- there is a place for everyone! With a near perfect climate, low crime rate, healthy & growing housing market, year-round entertainment and activities and a scenic backdrop that inspired Katherine Lee Bates’ America the Beautiful, we are proud to be one of the 450,000 people that call the Pikes Peak Region… home.

Here are some other great sites about Colorado Springs:

Many people who come to Colorado Springs to visit… come back to live.  Come and find out why!

I love the giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo!  I miss riding with the Colorado Springs Cycling Club and training in Garden of the Gods.  IF you can ride a bike there you can ride anywhere.

BUT, I don't think you are the #2 city in Colorado.  Isn't Aurora #2?  I think ColoSpgs is #3.

My favorite facts about 'The Springs'. Circle Drive isn't a circle at all. Yes the is a statue in the middle of the street. And there is no oxygen here! But the Springs has the best zoo ever, a work out for your legs and some cool animals too!

...Oh! And Circle Drive has MANY names- depending on where in the city you are... Fontenero, Fontmore, Fillmore, Circle, Lake...

What a great city to give directions in!

My sister graduated from USAFA in 1981.  I have been to the Springs many times and love it.  Does the Broadmore still have the fun alpine slide?

Sam- The Broadmoor Alpine Slide has not been functional for the majority of the past few years. I have not heard whether or not it is opened this year. Thank you for stopping by!

Hi Mariana - This is exactly the kind of content that I'd love to see on that 'other site' we're working on. Maybe tweak it a little bit and expand into separate posts on some of the more significant topics? (recreation, golf, zoo, family focus, housing)
