Colorado Springs started out in 1871, as a resort town for the wealthy European and East Coast friends and family of our city’s founder, General William Jackson Palmer. Gold was soon found in the nearby hills of Cripple Creek, but the tourist industry has always been the real staple of our community. The scenic beauty of Colorado Springs- nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and Pikes Peak- has always been our main stronghold for tourism.
However, in 1942, with the start of World War II, 137,000 acres south of Colorado Springs was donated to the U.S. Military; which soon became the Mountain Post of Fort Carson. Ever since then, military has remained a large and valuable part of the life and economy of our city. Besides Fort Carson, other military bases and installations include:
- NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command)
- Air Force Academy – where the Fighting Falcon Air Force Football and cadet air shows are second to none!
There are other great industries that offer a lot to the Colorado Springs economy and community. Some of these include:
The Olympic Training Center ~ Located in the heart of Colorado Springs, the “OTC” offers amazing facilities and “high altitude training” for athletes world-wide.
- Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame ~ Just west of I-25 you will find a great museum that offers everything you would want to know about rodeos, cowboys and all the lives and events that made the professional rodeo what it is today.
- Focus on the Family ~ In northern Colorado Springs, Dr. James Dobson created this enormous facility and outreach center to help promote his family-oriented dreams and ambitions. In fact, recently, Colorado Springs was found to have more churches, synagogues, and other religious places of worship per capita than any other place in the U.S.
- Broadmoor Hotel ~ “Located in Colorado Springs at the foot of the Rockies on 3,000 acres, The BROADMOOR provides an environment of unparalleled beauty and luxury surrounded by the mountains and centered by Cheyenne Lake. One of the few resorts in the country to have earned the Mobil Five-Star and the AAA Five-Diamond ratings every year since the awards were established, The BROADMOOR is proud to provide guests with the finest in accommodations and services.”

Colorado Springs offers a comfortable and mild climate, as the Rocky Mountains offer protection against extreme weather. Even when it SNOWS, the warm sun is close behind, offering warm days to enjoy sledding and snowman building. Not to mention that Colorado Springs is just a day trip (about 2 1/2 hours each way) to the renowned ski resorts of Breckenridge and Keystone – where the conditions are ideal and the powder is real.
