Speachless Sunday ~ A Saturday Sail From Dana Point, CA
This was such a great day! Yesterday my parents took us out of Dana Point Harbor on their 38' Catalina Sailboat. This is a trip we have taken many times, but each time is a new adventure and experience! It was a slight bit overcast, but any day on the water is beautiful! The wind wasn't cooperating much, so we tacked back and forth for a while, about 4 miles out from the marina. Not too crowded, just a beautiful day. All of a sudden we were surrounded by pods of Dolphins! I am not talking the few here and there, we are talking at least 100 or more! We have never seen this many, EVER. It was so exciting! They were popping up everywhere! We have a few pictures, but they were difficult to capture with the camera we had. Once the excitement of the dolphins subsided, we decided to slowly motor back to the marina since the wind had all but died. Then the ultimate-my dad said "Hey! Look! It's a whale!" Sure enough, about 40 feet from the bow of the boat, was one of the biggest whales we have ever seen on one of these trips! He was at least 50' long! Big gray one, poppin in and out of the water and blowin air! Neither my parents or I were able to capture a good shot of him, plus we wanted to see him in all his glory without worrying about the camera! 3 other boats saw him as well, and we all had a great show for about 4 minutes as he made his way down the coast. One of the boats on sail got a little to close and he was gone. It was amazing! We saw a few more dolphin after him, but he was amazing. Very strange for this time of year and strange for him to be as close to shore as he was. The sun eventually did shine through and we enjoyed some good wine and a great BBQ once we were back in the slip! Life is good!
