Blog Comments: Thorns amongst the flowers.

By
Industry Observer

When I posted my “Little Orphan Rodney” blog this morning I never thought it would create such a firestorm of comments.

I been so inspired by the spirit of kindness and generosity on Active Rain that I try hard to make my voice here be a voice of inclusion, a voice a sharing… with a dash of humor.

Two simple little AR blogs in particular have touched me, inspired me and have COMPLETYLY changed the way I now approach my blog and my industry. They represent generosity in the purist of sense. Neither blogger needed to share their “secrets”. But they did. Those two blogs (from a while back now) were: Bonnie Cox’s 200-Step Marketing Plan and Derek & Mariana Wagner’s What We Do for Our Sellers.

Here in this big puddle I have learned so much on so many levels. Above ALL ELSE Active Rain is about sharing ideas, and helping colleagues overcome obstacles and achieve all they hope and dream. The staging industry has much to learn from realtors... especially realtors on AR.

I share because I KNOW a competitively healthy and united staging industry will not only benefit the consumer but also those people who chose to make staging a career. I share to counter an industry that is more focused on discrediting each other, at times reducing itself into being a petty bickering bunch. I choose to follow what I believe is a better way. A way so wonderfully embodied here on Active Rain.

So you can only imagine what it was like for me to post my “helpful blog complete with goofy graphic”… only to see it “blow-up” with controversy.

But I believe all things cross my path for a reason. And while I may not understand why at the time there is a LESSON OF GOOD to be learned.

First and foremost I read the comments and took from them the helpful ideas, thoughts and insights others kindly shared. I purposely write blogs with the hope that they DO inspire comments for all the stagers (and anyone else) to read and learn from.

But the one comment in my blog today that was construed as being negative I chose to keep posted. Why did I not delete it?  I think the dialogue around and about THAT comment was as valuable as the initial blog itself. The thorn held another lesson to be learned.

Spouting an divisive opinion is easy… crafting an inclusive message so that one "hears" is much harder. Striking out at those we disagree with is easy… reaching out to those we don’t understand is much harder.

So while we may not like it or understand it, God put thorns on flowers for a reason.  My advice is to enjoy the flowers, and be careful not allow the pricks get to you or turn into one yourself.

I don't have anything all that intelligent to add here; it's a very pretty flower on that cactus and it makes sense the plant would want to protect it. I like the way you handled the comment on your other blog. Interestingly enough, Mary McKnight had given some tips today on handling blog comments and she used the phrase don't buy a room in the asylum with your lunatic blog commenter...or something like that!  Then someone else referred her to your blog as an example!

Hi Craig,  I missed the blog earlier, but just finished reading it tonight.  You handled it well.  I don't know if you ever watched West Wing. But there was an episode when Josh Limon had bloggers blogging nonsense about him.  He made  the mistake of getting involved, trying to straighten things out and of course it went downhill from there.  It was very funny to watch, but I can see how it would be distressing to be the one they are talking about.

Anonymous bloggers have no balls.  Plain and simple.  If you have credibility you fuss up and say it, sign your name to it and make it REAL.

Who knows if that person was one of the associates here just trying to stir up a storm or a real person with a beef against Realtors?

As a listing agent, I spend a lot of money, basically RISKING my income on the chance I have a real seller that is motivated to sell.  I offer a 2 hour staging session with an AWESOME stager.  If the seller is motivated they will LISTEN and do what she says.  If not, I worry.

I also offer a Home owner warranty and a pre-inspection on the home.  I figure my income is based on the success of selling the home, therefore I do everything in my power to be sure it's staged well and working right.  If the seller gives me the feeling they are 100% on board, I walk away.  Listings are a dime a dozen.  I don't  need them, they need me.

Generally my seller's appreciate my cantor and honestly.

Oh by the way, I have an 8 mega pixel camera and can make it work.

Cheap?  Not me, I'm priceless!

P.S. I'm going to tell BC you are blog quoting her.  We had dinner Friday night...she's ok, but not into blogging.  I wish she would come back.

You did a great job with a difficult situation! Great living lesson for all of us.  Today you could read Mary McKnights blog and see in the comments from the community that a field trip to Craig's blog gave a first hand view into a thorny situation.

Thanks for reminding us all to take a step back and focus postively on building our industry!

Sometimes I feel like I'm beating my head against a brick wall trying to get others to understand or appreciate our industry. All things take time, you've reminded us more than once to be patient.

One of our Sons is a Career Marine. He sent this to me. I thought you would like to see it. I placed it back here so I would not divert attention from your Thanks Giving Day post.
