NEISD opens first ‘green' school

Cibolo Green Elementary School, a model for energy and environmental design

Where did summer go?  School starts Monday, August 23 when 790 eager students will stream into the new Cibolo Green Elementary School, North East ISD's first ‘green' campus. The campus will include all the necessary features of a standard elementary school -  45 classrooms with workrooms and book storage, a computer lab, pull-out classrooms, library and media center, 2 gyms plus more. But what makes this school different and how it earned it's "green" title  is the manner in which these components have been incorporated into the construction.

Cibolo Green used natural Texas sedimentary rock. A special limestone called Cordova Shell that showcases marine fossils from the ancient Texas seas was selected as both an architectural element and a learning tool.  Recycled glass tiles line halls and drinking fountain areas. The windows provide natural lighting and reduce energy use.

Each grade level covers an environmental design feature. For example, the kindergarten is home to Site Sustainability, first grade is Indoor Environmental Quality, second grade is Materials and Resources, third grade is Water Efficiency, fourth grade is Energy and Atmosphere, and fifth grade is Design and Innovation.  Teachers will also make use of environmental curriculum, such as Project Wild, in their instruction plans.

Cibolo Green Elemenary is located at 24315 Bulverde Green, San Antonio, TX 78261

Thanks, Robert,

Debbie, I have seen solar being used around town but I don't know if this school is using any of the things you mention.

Cheryl,  I can't wait to see the interior of the school with my own eyes.

Hi Shirley, this is the wave of the future, how lucky are the kids to be going to this first of it's kind school!  On a totally separate and off subject note, my husband and I were trying to remember the name of a creek we used to go to near the Gunnison/Lake City area.  Your post gave me the answer; it was Cibolo Creek!  Thanks Shirley!

Shirley - How wonderful that they have managed to build a green school.  When you stop to think about it, the large flat roof tops make a natural matrix for installing solar panels.  And when school is out in the summer months, the school could sell power back to the grid, and help fund the schools.

Schools have come a long way in the last few years.   I like that they used natural Texas rock.
