Marijuana Dispensaries Outnumber Starbucks .........

Here in Denver and surrounding cities, we have a multitude of marijuana dispensaries.    To date --- there are almost 2 to 1 dispensaries to STARBUCKS!     The last record showed 390 medical marijuana dispensaries and 208 Starbucks shops!

There is a business license required for this business.    The application fee is $2,000 and an annual fee of $3,000 to maintain this license.    Fingerprints are required and inspections of the building.    If you do not own the building, a lease must be submitted with the license application.

There are many police calls to areas around dispensaries.    As you can imagine, if a business owner is able to pay for these fees, there MUST be some money in this business, and always attracts the attention of burglars!      With this, a few cities around Denver have decide to vote to ban these dispensaries.   The Broomfield City Council has become the latest City to consider this vote.   This vote will possibly ban selling or growing medical marijuana as well as ones that make tinctures, baked goods or other "marijuana-infused products."

Superior and Vail last month were among the first cities to permanently ban marijuana dispensaries and outlaw such businesses.

I just did a search and found the closest dispensary to my house is at least 20 minutes away!

How does YOUR State feel about this type of business?    Are these approved across the Country?

Hi Joan,

Are the dispensaries for medical reasons only?  (glaucoma and dementia patients)  I have never heard of that before. Here in Chicago there's a lot of talk about making it legal, I didn't think it was actually happening in other states.

Hi Brenda,   Medical marijuana is for chronic pain patients.    There are a few doctors in town that will prescribe marijuana over pain killers.     We have had legal dispensaries now for a few years.

Arvada Co had issued a moratorium earlier this year and it was recently extended until the city council could work out "zoning issues". Chances are Arvada will not allow MMJ anytime soon. In 2006 they amended a clean air ordinance disallowing smoking even in cigar shops and hookah bars. Arvada tends to have a traditional and "cleaner" view on things. Luckily Lakewood is just a hop or a skip away and there are plenty dispensaries to be found there!

Matthew --- wow, guess I am not so up-to-date on these happenings.    It has been in the news lately, and thought it was blog-worthy!

Joan, I think our city or county would approve marijuana use for medicinal purposes. Frankly, our police chief has pretty much said if you get caught with marijuana, without a script, all you will get, is a ticket.

I need to check on this for my area here in WV...here's what I found...

Of the fifty states that have medical marijuana laws, currently, thirteen of them, Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington, have legally authorized the medicinal use of marijuana and it's dispensaries within their respective state borders. Most of these marijuana dispensaries and clinics are in full compliance with local and state regulations; other marijuana dispensaries have not been so careful and have been closed down and/or cited by local law enforcement agents for noncompliance.

All interesting facts --- wonder why the whole US has not approved this?

I live in New Jersey and I think the local residents would welcome some new buisiness to bring some money in..we already have the crime because of hard drugs;particularly Heroin as we supply the anything east  of the Mississippi due to our Ports in Newark/Elizabeth NJ. Marijuanna would be a refresher :)

It is tough to see so many pot shops.   I know I have 3 within walking distance!

This is still big business, and our real estate market exploded when we had recreational pot legalized here.

Colorado was one of three states to initially legalize it.

Politicians did say having pot legalized would lead to much hard drug use, and it could have.

That is too bad too, really enjoy Starbucks, but have no need for a pot shop!
