A Project Engineer to a Real Estate Agent.......Really?

Surprisingly or maybe not so surprisingly I get this response a lot with my chosen transition over to real estate from my previous career in the Construction Project Engineering field.  Some would probably be offended by the responses received by a given few, but personally I find it very entertaining.  Why you ask?  Great question.....it gives me an opportunity to prove many of the stereotypes that have been laid on REALTORS and Real Estate Professionals for many years completely wrong.  Unfortunately, like anything else, people tend to pay attention and hold onto negative experiences, 2nd hand accounts, and other examples that would leave a negative connotation on our field.  Basically, like our modern day news.....who cares if it's not negative right?

What are a few things I've learned that help overcome these stereotypes to the point you can almost hear a client or potential client take a breath of relief?  Simple.

•·     Be responsive and thorough.  When people call, pick up.  Sure not all the time are we going to have the proper time needed to actually have a full conversation with someone, but at least pick up and acknowledge you care, take a short note, and give an approximate time when you'll be able to call them, and that the reason you want to talk later is because you want to be thorough and get it right the first time.

•·     Dress like you care.  I'm not saying you have to throw on a suit every day, but look decent.

•·     Go out of your comfort zone for a client every now and then.  Spend a little extra time on a request.  If the request seems semi ridiculous humor them and follow through anyways.  You might be surprised what it could yield you later (Referrals, positive praise to client contacts..etc.)

•·     Don't act like you care.....Actually care.

•·     Pay attention to detail.

•·     BE ON TIME.

These are just a few small ideas to help generate thoughts as to how to improve yourself as you advance in your career.  Naturally, feel free to add your own ideas and major things that help you stand apart from others in your area.

Thanks in advanced for any comments!

Brian, great post!  I love the "don't act like you care"..."care".   I find that project managers make great real estate agents.

Good luck!  I end up working with a lot of software engineers so maybe I'll call you for advice.  :)

Yvette, Thanks for the kind words!  I'm loving it so far and look forward to continued education and expanding my client base.  Thanks for the comment!

Mario, Those pesky engineers can sure be a handful ;).  Hahah but in all seriousness just hand them as much information, literature, and statistics as you can about the market, certain properties you look at, and anything else that will help them compare everything.  They'll feel more comfortable with your knowledge and tend to really start trusting your word over having to analyze everything.

Thanks for the comment!
