I made my 5 year old daughter a promise this morning that so far I have been able to keep. I can tell you another thing, this school year has snuck up and started on your Union county, NCreal estate agent. Yesterday I was running around making sure that my Kindergarten-er had everything to start school because she started TODAY!
Starting Kindergarten is a huge step for kiddos. They will meet lots of new friends, be in a different environment and have a whole new set of rules. What can we do as parents to help them prepare for this new world?
The Department of Public Instruction has 5 areas of early childhood development:
1. intellectual development
2. language and communication
3. health and physical development
4. emotional and social development
5. children's attitude and interest toward learning
Just like no two snowflakes are the same, neither are kids. They all develop at different rates and at their own time. I like to say, "This is Caroline's world and we all just live in it" about out 5 year old. Some kids are well developed like my 5 year old in language, she started with 3 word sentences at 9 months old. Mind you, she also began swim lessons and swam on her own just a month later. Direct contrast is our now 6th grader who did not talk until he was 18 months old.
While doing my research I found that the North Carolina Ready School Initiative. It states that school readiness comes in two parts. The first is the skills and abilities that kids have. The second is the readiness of the school to meet the needs of these children. If you are weighing sending your child to kindergarten, here is the N.C. Ready School Initiative Web site for some more information www.ncreadyschools.org. If you want to see the report card for the schools around you, visit this site links to http://www.ncreportcards.org/src.
One of the scariest things for the kids themselves is getting their shots for school. This is the list to be mindful of when sending your little one to school:
Required Immunizations | Number of Doses |
DTP/DT/DtaP | 5 |
Polio | 4 |
MMR |
2 for measles and mumps, 1 for rubella |
Hepatitis B | 3 |
Hepatitis A | n/a |
Varicella |
1 |
Most important criteria when getting your kiddo ready for Kindergarten is if your child is 5 years old by Aug. 31, then they are ready for kindergarten! and look, still no tears, I think this post was therapeutic!
Your Union county, NC real estate agent is a Mommy first, today was a hard day for me as my baby girl started school. I think it was made even worse by the fact that she got out of the car, waved and ran off!
