Anger and disappointment in response to Target's contribution of $150,000 to the political action committee of Minnesota's anti-gay gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, is gaining momentum.

"What's important in life is people, I love the people in my life, more than anything I could buy in this store - I'm going to boycott Target until they make this right" - Randi Reitan (Mother and Grand-mother)

"A lot of people feel betrayed by this place where everybody goes to shop and you get to see them at Pride and you feel good that you're supporting a corporation that's giving back to the community," Monica Meyer, interim head of the gay rights group OutFront Minnesota.

This is the first I heard of this.  That is very troubling.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Stewart, where are you going to shop?  Walmart?  It is important to consider just who will benefit from a Target boycott.  Should we continue to patronize retailers who support President Obama?  You know, he's the guy who said he would eliminate don't ask don't tell.  Maybe he forgot to put it on his calendar. Maybe we need to send him a round tuit.

If you ran a Minnesota corporation, and, like almost all large corporations, there were going to be political contributions, what would you do?  The two choices are between one side that is more socially sensitive, but has an agenda that is anti-business and would possibly damage the corporation you have a fiduciary duty to run profitably.  The other side has some poor excuses for humans, but they will support legislation favorable to business.

Mike....people will react the way they want to. I used to buy Dixie Chicks..and don't anymore. People who put themselves out there need to be prepared to accept that some people won't like it. This is free speech, but free speech means they have a right to say it, and we have a right to react. Plus...I believe that this is different because it was company money. In essence, they have taken my money and used it to support a cause I don't....so I can choose to boycott that store. That's fair....

Wow, Stewart, that was extremely moving. I have a dear friend who is the store manager at a huge Target in San Francisco. I'm calling him and his partner (Husband) tonight to see how this is affecting them. I'll let you know what I find out.

Very moving...thank you Stewart.  In answer to the where are you going to shop question - there are MANY choices.  Target and Walmart aren't the only options.  They may be convenient, but if you take some time to look around you may find that there are many locally owned and operated businesses that can supply all of your needs AND you are directly supporting your local economy by shopping there.  One of the most frequently posted signs in our local shops reads "Only shop where you can yell at the owner."  ...no managers, regional VP's and the like...shop where you can speak directly to the owner when there is an issue.

Tom Emmer has spent the first two months of his campaign defending himself from having made the idiotic statement that restaurant waitpersons make too much money.  He's behind all three of his potential DFL challengers in the polls at this point.

If Target has money to burn and they need to dabble in Minnesota politics, they could spend some of it to get rid of Michele Bachmann.  Minnesotans would thank them for the public service and it would probably increase their revenues.
